Pocket Guide: Runaway Bay

Between the two larger and better-known resort towns of Montego Bay and Ocho Rio, Runaway Bay is one of the most picturesque areas in Jamaica.

Introducing Runaway Bay

Flanked by lush green hills and white sands, Runaway Bay is a stylish yet lively resort town with plenty of mid-range to high-end accommodation on offer, as well as private luxury villas and golf courses.

A little quieter than its neighboring resorts, Runaway Bay is a good place to stay to escape the cruise ship passengers at the terminal in Ocho Rios. The town is ideal for both families or couples looking for a romantic break.

Back in Time at Runaway Bay

No one quite knows exactly how Runaway Bay got its name, but there are a few theories among the locals. Some believe it was where the last of the Spanish fled the island after loosing to the English in the 1600s. Others think it was where the African slaves from the sugar plantations left for a better life in Cuba.

Exploring Runway Bay’s Beaches

Runaway Bay is home to a number of fine beaches, perfect for sunbathing and swimming, dining and snorkelling. The two free-access public beaches – Cardiff Hall, with changing rooms and a restaurant, and Fisherman’s Beach – are at either end of Runaway Bay and are popular with both locals and tourists.

There are also a few private beaches that you can use for a small fee – Ocean Park Beach and Breezes Beach, which both have a few more services to enjoy. Think sun beds, umbrellas and water-sports equipment rental. If you fancy joining a snorkelling or diving excursion, head to Ocean Park Beach.

Things to See and Do in Runaway Bay

One of the most important tourist attractions near Runaway Bay is the Green Grotto Caves, which are remarkable underground caverns with a fascinating history and filled with curious rock formations. Arrange a tour of the caves with a local guide to hear stories of rum stores and hiding Spaniards.
