The local Navajo Guides with Jeeps for hire will laugh when you say you're thinking of doing this 17-mile loop through the most famous buttes of Monument Valley in a small car, but go ahead and do it. Carefully. We saved $170 and were able to maneuver through the gulleys and rocks just fine. Driving ourselves enabled us to decide how long to spend at each spot, and whether to keep driving or get out and hike at our whim. The 360-degree views around the cabin with no other humans around offered something not found very often. Sitting on the deck at sunset while enjoying a glass of whiskey and looking at the Bears Ears was truly a western experience. The sunrises make you want to get up early just to experience the beauty. It makes you understand the use of pink and turquoise in the Native American art of this region. The wildlife around the cabin was wonderful. At night the howling of the coyotes and bugling of the elk and the deer grazing by the cabin was so nice, it let us know we were the visitors to the area, they owned it. The fact the cabin was dog friendly and we were able to travel with our two dogs made the trip for us. They are large dogs and enjoy hiking and being with us. They are well trained to not bother the wildlife, this would be essential in this area. The staff were very nice and were able to accommodate us a bit early. A few things did bother me though. Upon arriving to my room there a really strong smell of disinfectant which triggered my headache. The food from the restaurant was ok for dinner (we had the burger with fries, chicken tenders, and chilli) . The free breakfast buffet was not good at all. The eggs were tasteless, bagels were hard, and there were no fruits or anything healthier to eat besides light and fit yogurt. Everything served in paper plates, disposable silverware and styrofoam cups."
