Situated in the department of Var in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Fréjus has retained a great many relics of its past, having once been the most important military port in the Roman Mediterranean. Today, it is a very popular holiday destination with 4 miles of fine sandy beaches, exceptional surroundings and a thriving art and culture scene.
The magnificent Fréjus Port is a wonderful place for strolls, with its 400-metre canal extending right up to the gates of the historic town centre. The beaches come in every variety: wild, well-equipped, family-friendly or sporty – all you need to do is choose one! After lounging around under the sun for a while, reinvigorate yourself by setting off on one of the many signposted trails to explore the incredible natural surroundings on foot or by mountain bike.
History lovers will be astounded by the town's magnificently preserved Roman buildings. Gaze in wonder at the amphitheatre, built between the 1st and 2nd centuries, the numerous remaining pillars of the aqueduct, and the remaining sections of the ramparts. The Roman theatre still welcomes audiences, most notably during the Festival des Nuits Auréliennes.
Other exceptional monuments enhancing the town's appeal include the Notre-Dame-de-Jérusalem Chapel designed by Jean Cocteau, the superb Villa Aurélienne which also hosts photography exhibitions, and a number of more unusual places such as the replica of the Great Mosque of Djenné and the Hong Hien pagoda.
Fréjus has two nearby airports with flights to the UK: Nice Côte-d'Azur and Toulon-Hyères. It is also easy to reach by car via the A8 motorway, by rail and also by coach from the main towns of the Côte d'Azur. Once there, you can easily get around on foot or bicycle, as well as taking a tour of the town on the Petit Train which runs during the school holidays.
