Située au coeur des Marches de Bretagne, c'est l'une des plus grande forteresse d'Europe. Au Xe siècle, les vikings s'installent. Au XIe siècle, une première motte féodale en bois, assise sur un promontoire rocheux entouré de marécages, assure la défense du carrefour entre le Maine, l'Anjou, la Normandie et la Bretagne. Ce premier château* fort appartient à la famille de Fougères. En 1066, le seigneur de Fougères* participe à la conquête de l'Angleterre aux côtés de Guillaume le Conquérant. Au XIIe siècle, en 1166, Henri II Plantagenêt, roi d'Angleterre, détruit par l'incendie le château en bois* du trop puissant seigneur de Fougères. Le baron de Fougères, Raoul II, fait reconstruire, le château en pierre, avec un puissant donjon. Au XIIIe siècle, Raoul III fait hommage de Fougères à Louis IX (Saint-Louis). Pierre de Dreux, dit Mauclerc*, s'empare de Fougères par surprise en 1231 mais Louis IX, à la tête de son armée, vient reprendre la ville. Raoul III est le compagnon d'armes de Louis IX lors de la septième croisade et meurt en 1256. Jeanne de Fougères, unique héritière de Raoul III de Fougères épouse Hugues XII de Lusignan* comte de la Marche en 1253. Les terres de la maison de Fougères furent un élément important de la puissance des comtes de La Marche dans le royaume de France. Les Lusignan amélioreront le château. La légende de Mélusine sera importée à Fougères par les Lusignan, originaires du Poitou. Le XIIIe siècle verra l'édification de murailles autour de la ville et de quatre portes, chacune située sur un point cardinal. Au début du XIVe siècle, Philippe le Bel confisque la baronnie de Fougères qui ne cesse de passer d'une famille à l'autre au gré des alliances*. Jean de Montfort, duc de Bretagne s'installe à Fougères. Duguesclin s'empare de la ville en 1373 et remet le château à Pierre d'Alençon. XVe siècle. Pendant la Guerre de Cent Ans, en 1449, Surienne*, un mercenaire à la solde des anglais s'empare du château par surprise. En 1488, la Bretagne est vaincue par la France* à la bataille de Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier. La Bretagne sera rattachée à la France en 1532, par l'Acte d'Union. Fougères perd son intérêt militaire. XVIe siècle. Fougères est ville française, elle se consacre au développent de l'architecture civile et religieuse. Au XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, la forteresse est affectée au gouverneur de la ville. Non entretenues les construction de la basse-cour s'écroulent. En 1793, Fougères est prise dans les trouble de la chouannerie*. Au XIXe siècle, la municipalité rachète la forteresse qui est classée monument historique. Ce château est cité pour la première fois vers 1040-10456 (H. GUILLOTEL, Recueil des Actes des ducs de Bretagne, 944-1148, Thèse de doctorat, Paris II, 1973, p.171.) Raoul Ier de Fougères participa aux expéditions militaires de Guillaume le Conquérant. Il combattit auprès de lui à la bataille d'Hasting en 1066. Pour le récompenser, Guillaume lui donna des possessions considérables. La donation du roi d'Angleterre comprenait, en Normandie : Savigny, les Loges, Brecé, Mesnil-Trove, Molines, Moidré, Heudi-Mesnil, Crèteville, Viré, Egouville, Courtils, Verdun, La Mancellière, Romagné, Wattigny, l'Appentis, Bouillon, etc. — En Angleterre : Bellingstone, Winchester, Kington, Plymton et Thetford. (D. Morice, t. III, col. 619, 621). Raoul Ier aida Henri Ier Beauclerc (plus jeune fils du Conquérant, Beauclerc parce qu'il savait lire le latin), roi des anglais, à s'emparer du duché de Normandie aux dépens de son frère Robert-Courteheuse (Courte-Cuisse). Robert est fait prisonnier à la bataille de Tinchebray le 28 septembre 1106, il mourra, à l'âge de 80 ans, toujours prisonnier. Raoul de son côté passa le reste de sa vie en exercices religieux, pèlerinages et donations pieuses. Sur la fin de sa vie, Raoul quitta le monde et prit l'habit religieux à Savigny où y mourut en 1122. Raoul II disposait d'une puissance considérable. Les seigneurs de Fougères contrôlaient, rien que dans leur fief de Fougères, un réseau de 45 manoirs à mottes, c'était le plus important réseau de sites fortifiés de la région après celui du comte de Rennes et duc de Bretagne. Ces domaine procuraient également d'important revenus. De plus, ses liens familiaux l'apparentait aux plus grands seigneurs. Raoul était donc un adversaire désigné de Henri II Plantagenêt. Le roi d’Angleterre ne pouvait accepter l’accroissement de pouvoir du seigneur de Fougères, il prit les devant et fit saisir certaines possessions de Raoul (château de Dol, de Combourg). Raoul II finit par prendre le parti de Richard Coeur de Lion contre son père Henri II. Une chevauchée, composée des fameux routiers d’Henri II, obligea Raoul II et une centaine d'autres seigneurs à s'enfermer dans la tour de Dol, le 20 août 1173. Après reddition, Raoul fut fait prisonnier et son château rasé. Raoul II put s’en sortir en échange de ses deux fils aînés. En 1175, Raoul put récupérer son fief de Fougères. La baronnie de Fougères est confisquée par le roi Philippe-le-Bel sur Guy de Lusignan qui s'était allié aux Anglais au début du XIVème siècle. François de Surienne, mercenaire espagnol à la solde des anglais, attaque Fougères avec 600 hommes en mars 1449. La ville est pillée et les habitants massacrés. Surienne se retranche à Fougères en 1450 il se rendra au duc de Bretagne François Ier après deux mois de siège et une épidémie de peste. La Tremoille, lieutenant général des armées françaises prend le château de Fougères, malgré une défense de 3000 hommes, en 1488. Le roi de France laissera une garnison à Fougères. Le marquis Armand de la Rouërie, né à Fougères en 1751, a été l'instigateur de la conspiration de l'Ouest contre la Convention. En mars 1793, six à sept mille hommes se rassemblent aux abords de la forêt de Fougères, pour protester contre un décret de la Convention qui ordonnait le recrutement de trois cents mille hommes dans la région.
