The colourful fishing port of Bastia in northern Corsica mixes old and new effortlessly. Overlooked by the impressive ramparts of the Terra Nova citadel, the city’s cathedral and 17th-century homes nestle side-by-side with fine dining restaurants and luxury boutiques. It’s a city made for travellers who love to explore, and who love to take photographs.
Bastia sits between high mountains and the sea, and like many Mediterranean destinations it has two distinct areas – the old town and the new town. In the new area of the city, you’ll find artisanal delis and food producers. If you’re hoping to enjoy more of Bastia’s harbourside nightlife, consider a hotel near Terra Vecchia, such as the Hôtel des Gouverneurs which is right on the water.
If you’re visiting Bastia to experience Corsica’s uniquely wild countryside, strap on your hiking boots and explore the Castagniccia. This so-called small chestnut grove is actually around 60 square miles (100km²) of sweet chestnut forest, cloaking the nearby San Petrone mountain in trees. If you do make it to the top, you’ll be rewarded with views that stretch as far as Tuscany to the east and the Alps to the north.
Bastia is the most important port on the island and its rustic beauty attracts thousands of visitors each year, which has driven hotel prices ever higher. Decide what’s important to you for your stay, and you’ll find it much easier to find cheap hotels in Bastia within your budget.
For example, if price is your main concern, or you’re looking to stay close to Bastia train station, Best Western Corsica Hotel offers comfortable, value-for-money rooms. If you’d rather be nearer the sea, many of our three-star hotels in Bastia are closer to either of the city’s harbours. You will pay a little more to be more conveniently placed in the town centre, but places such as Hôtel Posta Vecchia are right by the water and can even offer rooms with a sea view (at an extra cost, of course).
For a convenient hotel near the main ferry terminal, Hôtel Riviera offers clean, comfortable rooms not far from Bastia old town. Alternatively, check out our two-star hotels in Bastia for more budget hotel inspiration.
Bastia’s popularity as a family holiday destination has been growing steadily over the past decade, with its popularity increasing thanks to its photogenic architecture, delicious local cuisine and unique independent culture. Historically most popular with Italian and French tourists, visitors from all over the world are now choosing to explore Bastia as part of a tour between the South of France and Northern Italy.
To cope with demand, there are many hotels in Bastia that offer convenient rooms with amenities especially for children. The Sud Hotel is out of the busy part of town, keeping night-time noise to a minimum. Visiting all Bastia’s many sights is still easy however, thanks to the city’s free bus and rail services, which have stops near to the hotel. It also has a sun terrace where you can relax with a book while the children play.
The Hotel Napoléon is near Bastia train station to the north of the city, close to local transport links, the ferry terminal and the Tourist Information Centre. Plus, all rooms are soundproofed to ensure a good night’s sleep.

Corsica may be an island overflowing with independent culture and even its own language, but it's actually part of France. This means that French rules apply regarding smoking – no smoking indoors, no smoking in outdoor public areas such as railway stations, and no smoking in restaurants and bars. You can, however, smoke in designated smoking areas outside cafés and bars.
While smoking is banned from most public areas, hotels are permitted to apply for some of their rooms to be treated as smoking rooms. There are some hotels that do this and some that don’t, so it’s a good idea to check that the hotel you plan to stay in offers these rooms if you do want to smoke while you visit Bastia.
You can check if hotels offer smoking rooms (or if they have a no-smoking policy) on their Expedia pages, where all guest information is available.
