An adventure of a lifetime, for this 6-day tour of Romania we have chosen an assortment of rich sensory experiences, from medieval sites to a taste of the wilderness, with deep forests, vibrantly coloured wildflowers and fresh mountain air (in the right season), all the way to modern exhibits, and a dash of traditional herbs and spices with the delicious foods we will be trying in every medieval town we visit.

The city of Alba-Iulia, located in Central Romania is the site of an old Vauban-style fortress, considered impossible to conquer due to the 7-corner star model designed by the great French engineer, veteran, and architect Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. The Alba Carolina citadel, an important destination on our Castles of Romania tour, is surrounded by three lines of fortification and its remarkable architecture make it one of the most representative fortresses in Romania; it is also one of the largest of its kind in Eastern Europe.

The tower began to be built at the end of 13th century, It was built in the 14th century as a simple gate tower with a maximum of two levels: the ground floor and first two floors of the tower were made of sandstone and river rock, the first stage of the tower construction probably had a form identical to the Tailors tower. The thickness of the base walls were 2.35 metres, 1.30 metres on the second floor, stone tiles of basalt were used only at the corners. In the 16th century the old roof was demolished, they have added two floors built of brick and it was built a balcony and the roof. Nobody knows for sure how the roof was before the 1676 fire. The actual 5 turrets baroque roof with bulbs represents an exceptional achievement of the three Pilgrim masters: Veit Gruber from Tyrol, Philip Bong of Salzburg and carpenter Valentinus Auslander, who rebuilt the tower after the great fire of 1676 from March to September 1677 for 650 florins.

The next architectural piece is one of the oldest orthodox churches in Romania, this historical monument was built on top of the ruins of a building dating back to the 4th century, and it was constructed in several stages, the final changes having been made in the 13th century. You will marvel at the mixture of styles, which have blended over the centuries in this ancient “temple”, having also been proposed to join the UNESCO Heritage list of historical sites. Nicolae Iorga, the greatest Romanian historian, has deemed the Saint Nicolae Church in Densus “unparalleled in the entire Romanian tradition”. Here you can admire mural paintings dating back to 1443, inside an ingenious construction which has striven to preserve its history throughout each stage.
