- Puerto Rico Luxury holidays
The Caribbean archipelago of Puerto Rico - which is also the name of its largest island - is home to more than three million people, along with a wealth of scenery and wildlife, traditional cuisine and tropical climate that combine to create a rich and tempting tapestry to attract tourists from all over the world to its shores in order to take a luxury break.
Puerto Rico - home of diverse biology
Puerto Rico's steady climate and lush landscape is home to a large number of plants and animals, many of which are unique to the archipelago, and depending on where precisely you visit, you may have the opportunity to see some of these species up close.
There are 16 endemic bird species, 39 reptiles and amphibians, and 239 plant species, with the vast majority of all of these to be found on the island of Puerto Rico itself. The tropical rainforest of El Yunque National Forest, on the north-east of the island, provides the habitat for many of these species, amongst a total of 50 types of bird and over 240 plants. The forest is also where you will find many types of coqui, perhaps the most famous of Puerto Rico's endemic species, which is a type of frog named after the sound it produces.
A view of the world from Puerto Rico
One of the island's most significant landmarks is the Arecibo Observatory, found near the northern coast, and the location of the world's largest radio telescope. Many home computer users have processed data from the telescope as part of the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence project, which used a background application to check observatory data for signs of artificial radio signals.
When should I visit Puerto Rico?
If the timing of your visit is determined by the weather conditions, then you should take note of Puerto Rico's two distinct seasons. During the winter months, average low temperatures are 22-23°C, with average highs of 28-29°C. During the summer, there is only a very slight increase, to lows around 26°C and highs around 32°C. Rainfall levels may be more relevant to consider, as an average of about five inches falls in each month from April through to December, while in January, February and March, the archipelago is much drier, with only around 2-3 inches of rain.
