- Skiathos Luxury holidays
Skiathos is the name given both to the westernmost of the Northern Sporades group of Greek Islands, and is also the name of the largest town on the island itself. The town has a resident population of around 5,000 people, while elsewhere on the island, Xanemos, Kalyvia, Troulos and Koukounaries are among the other permanent settlements with 100-200 inhabitants each.
Skiathos - unspoilt beaches, spoilt for choice
The island of Skiathos may be only 12 km long and 6 km wide, but its coastline has a wealth of features, ranging from inlets to peninsulas, and more than 60 individual beaches along its 44 km perimeter. Most of these are sandy and many offer views across to nearby islets, particularly on a clear day. With the water lapping at the edge of the sand, and the sun beaming down, it's easy to see why so many holidaymakers choose to take their luxury break in Skiathos.
As an island, the sea is an important part of life on Skiathos, and many of the activities you can partake in are based on the waves or beneath them. Skiathos Diving Centre caters for divers wishing to explore the coastline and sea bed, while fishing trips and boat excursions can allow you to get out on the surface for a day.
The cinematic sights of Skiathos
Film fans may recognise Skiathos as the setting for parts of the feel-good ABBA-inspired movie Mamma Mia! and a trip to the island can incorporate a tour of the main locations, as well as the chance at certain times to catch a screening of the movie itself.
When should I visit Skiathos?
Like many of the Greek Islands, Skiathos has a climate of hot summers and mild winters, with daytime temperatures around 30C in June, July and August, and staying in double figures even in the coldest winter months. Night-time temperatures are typically around 10°C cooler, meaning that in the summer you can expect the nights to be close to 20°C, while in winter they typically still remain above freezing.
If you are planning your visit around the beaches and watersports activities, then the temperature of the sea could be an important factor to take into account. This remains around 15°C from late autumn through the winter and most of the spring, before rising towards the mid-20s from June until October.
