in a nutshell
The Sunday Upmarket is a gastronomic treat comprised of approximately 200 stalls that graces the streets of Shoreditch, perhaps not surprisingly, every Sunday. From 10am – 6pm tourists and locals alike can stuff themselves silly in the Old Truman Brewery which houses many of the market’s stalls.
Established in 2004, Upmarket offers more than just fantastic food, with creative producers and traders offering everything from fashion, accessories, art, interiors, music and some truly fantastic bakes. Many of the items you’ll find here are one-off items made by the stallholders themselves, making this the perfect place for a bite to eat and a good old rummage.
about the market
Located in the Old Truman Bakery on Brick Lane, the Sunday Upmarket is a great place to wile away a lazy Sunday. If it’s good grub you’re after, Upmarket’s famous food area boasts everything from Moroccan dishes and Turkish specialities to Spanish Paellas, Thai Food, fried plantain sandwiches and sushi that’s hand rolled in front of you. And if all that food leaves you feeling lethargic, an Ethiopian hand roasted coffee could be just what you need to bring you back to life.
If you’re looking for something nice and sweet, head to Just Baked by Jo, who made the move to Upmarket in 2015. Jo can be found in the market every Sunday selling brownies in a dizzying range of flavours that includes triple chocolate, Oreo cheesecake, peanut butter & jam, banoffee, and the crowd pleasing peanut butted & salted caramel. And as Jo says: "Unlike most other brownies on the market they are not spongey, cakey or chewy; instead they literally melt-in-your-mouth".
Perhaps you prefer your chocolaty treats from a little further afield, in which case, a visit to Miriam’s Brigadeiro should be right up your street. Here you can try the delicious Brigaderios, a Brazilian cake available in 19 different flavours. Miriam has brought her favourite childhood treat with her all the way from Brazil, much to the delight of the sweet-toothed Upmarket faithful.
If you’re crying out for something more savoury, a trip to Planet Falafel for a freshly made falafel wrap and salad could be worth your while. The falafels are delicious, healthy and made from quality ingredients - perfect for a low cost Sunday lunch.
