Description

Set out for a day of spectacular natural scenery and outdoor adventure in Tenorio Volcano National Park. Hike along hanging bridges and rainforest trails to see stunning waterfalls, glowing turquoise rivers, and the mist-shrouded peak of Tenorio, bookending your trek with a tasty breakfast and restaurant lunch.

Rise early and get picked up from your hotel, heading out into the countryside as dawn breaks over the beautiful landscapes beyond San Jose. After 2 hours of driving, stop to fuel up over a delicious breakfast before continuing to the last leg of the drive to Tenorio Volcano National Park.

Tighten your shoelaces and then set off down a nature trail behind your guide. Trek along for about 4 miles (6.4 km) through the rainforest, listening to the chirps and calls of exotic birds and learning about the region's native plants and animals from your guide as you walk.

Make your way to a breath-taking waterfall that tumbles down into a luminous turquoise pool, and hike along the banks of the Rio Celeste to see Los Teñideros, where the waters make a dramatic shift in colour due to chemicals in the soil. After your rainforest adventure comes to an end, relax over lunch at a local restaurant before the drive back to San Jose.

We were picked up by a tour van. Our driver was very nice and provided us with neck pillows, blankets and bottled water. We were the only people on the tour. This was the roughest ride I have ever been on. It felt like the van needed new shocks. I felt sick from the ride. I didn't eat the breakfast at El Jardin restaurant. My husband ate eggs, rice and beans, sausage and plantain. We met our guide, Ronald, at Tenorio Volcano N.P. He guided us for 3 hours--showed us a lizard, Orb Weaver Spider, a green vine snake, 2 Coati and Blue Morpho butterflies. Hiking at the park is very challenging-extremely steep steps and lotst of walking up and down terrain-sore for 2 days. I was unable to carry the extra weight of my backpack so Ronald carried it for me. He also helped me up the really steep steps. He was excellent and informative about the park and the very beautiful blue river and waterfall. Lunch was excellent-best in Costa Rica-chicken,beans,rice, salad, squash.

If you like hikes then this a must do activity. The trail is gorgeous and the views of the waterfall and the river are breathtaking. Our guide was nice and informative and we got to see wild animals at a close distance. However, the ride is super long and unfortunately you do not get to swim inside the water. (Tip: make sure to wear comfortable close toed shoes because there are a lot of slippery rocks and mud on the pathway)
