Description

Walk in Galata and find yourself in intriguing streets full of colourful life. Get a glimpse of synagogues, the Jewish Museum, Jewish Apartments, the amazing story of Abraham Camondo and other Jewish heritage sites such as the Camondo Stairs.

Istanbul has had a vibrant Jewish community for more than 1,000 years. After the Turkish conquest of Istanbul, Sultan Mehmet II encouraged immigration in order to repopulate the city. More than half a million Jews persecuted in Spain and Portugal were encouraged to establish themselves in the Ottoman Empire.

The new immigrants settled mostly near Galata – a quarter on the northern bank of the Golden Horn – where a Jewish community existed since the early days of the Ottoman Era. In Galata, walk along intriguing and colourful streets full of life. Synagogues, the Jewish Museum, Jewish Apartments, the amazing story of Abraham Camondo and other Jewish heritage sites are part of this tour.

This tour may not be possible during Jewish and Muslim religious holidays. The walking tour visits the Jewish Museum, Ashkenazi Synagogue and Schneidertempel Synagogue, and includes outer visits to Georgian Synagogue, Neve Shalom Synagogue, Italian Synagogue, Jewish Apartments and Camondo Buildings.
