Description

On a small-group tour of Galata, see the renowned Galata Tower, synagogues and the Kamondo Stairs in the ancient area. Bring your camera and your walking shoes on this excursion and enjoy convenient roundtrip transport to and from your hotel.

The hill where Galata is located today was covered with orchards during the Byzantine period and was named Sykai (The Fig Orchard) or Peran en Sykais (The Fig Field on the Other Side), referring to the “other side” of the Golden Horn. It was during the Byzantine period that the area began to be called Galata and a fortress was built by Emperor Theodosius II.

Explore Galata, a Genoese colony from the 6th to 15th centuries. This walk is around the famous Galata Tower, 219 feet (66.9 m) tall. With 9 storeys, the tower was the city's tallest structure when it was built. As you stroll around the area, you will see many churches, synagogues, hospitals, bank buildings, ancient walls and schools. Along the way, listen to tales and legends from your expert local guide.
