Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave Tour (ATM)

by Private Belize Adventure Duration 6h+ Free cancellation available No booking or credit card fees
per traveller Price is £173

Explore one of the most important Maya historic locations with a journey into the caves of Actun Tunichil Muknal. A personal guide shows you the archaeological site filled with human skeletons, ceramics, and ceremonial stoneware for a unique look at the Mayan civilisation and their grim relationship with death.

A ride from your hotel carries you through the countryside and into the protected wilderness of the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. Keep an eye out for Yucatan howler monkeys and the Baird's tapirs that give the area its name before you reach the mouth of the cave.

Once you step inside, you can see the calcified remains of people who died here more than 1,000 years ago, and come face-to-face with the role of human sacrifice in ancient Maya beliefs. At least 14 individuals lie around you and along the ancient underground river, including the famous “Crystal Maiden,” whose nearly complete skeleton has taken on a crystalline sheen.

While you explore, your guide explains the cave's sacred role to the ancient Maya and the meaning of the broken ceramics left behind with the bodies. Learn the meaning of the carvings and the long history of sacrifices to the rain god Chaac, and depart for the return trip with a new degree of knowledge about the land's ancient peoples.

The trip itself was absolutely amazing. The communication between guides wasn’t streamline and we had to pay for our own taxi back to our hotel once back in San Pedro. The hides themselves were really nice and the cave guide was TOP NOTCH named Jam.
