“Visitors to Oktoberfest are frequently surprised to learn it’s not all about beer. Ok, for most visitors it’s mostly about beer, but it’s also the world’s biggest folk festival with funfair rides, live music and celebrations of all things Bavarian. The action happens in Theresienwiese, a huge fairground southwest of Munich city centre. There are more than a dozen tents and the festival is much more manageable during the week when the weekend crowds have dissipated, so it’s worth staying a few days. This is the centre of Munich where many of the city’s sights are concentrated, including Marienplatz and St Peter’s Church.
