Zaanstad is a municipality just north of Amsterdam, and might just be one of the most important touristic destinations in this part of the Netherlands. This is thanks to its many cultural and historical attractions, diverse surroundings, great infrastructure and proximity to Amsterdam.
Thanks to the great infrastructure, you can stay anywhere in Zaanstad and still be close to most of the attractions in the city and its surroundings! There are several hotels to choose from in the area. Stay in a hotel close to the centre of the city of Zaandam for a central location and great connections to surrounding attractions and cities.
The municipality of Zaanstad exists of several towns and cities. The most important one is the city of Zaandam. It is nationally known for its traditional architecture, having one of the first Primark stores in the country (which really made Zaandam into a shopping destination!) and for some of the local products, like mayonnaise and cookies and chocolate from the brand Verkade. Locals know there is a lot more to the city. The Dam square it the place to be for restaurants, nightlife or having a drink at one of the terraces. The city has theatres, cinemas and museums and its own natural recreational area: Jagersveld.
Most of the international visitors go to Zaanstad for one thing, and one thing only (unfortunately, they are missing out on so much!): the Zaanse Schans. This historical area was established by the locals, to preserve some of the local area for following generations. It has old typical houses and mills, but also an old wooden shoe factory, bakery museum and some shops. Some of the houses are actual homes! This is also home to the Zaanstad Museum (to learn more about the area) and the Verkade Paviljoen, where you can learn more about this historical Dutch brand.
The typical architectural style was now mentioned twice. You can see it at the Zaanse Schans, but also the towns in Zaanstad still have houses like this! A very visual point in Zaanstad is the hotel just outside of the central station of Zaanstad. The hotels façade is made of many Zaans houses. One of them is blue, this one was sponsored by Albert Heijn, a Dutch supermarket. Their headquarters are right next to the station. The shopping street has been undergoing renovations to bring back more of this style, especially since it became such a prominent shopping destination.
Besides Zaandam, Zaanstad consists of more towns. These are more suburban, which means they have some shops, restaurants and other facilities, but locals usually go to Zaandam to go shopping. These villages, such as Zaandijk and Westzaan, are perfect to wander through to get a taste of the local atmosphere. Zaanstad is surrounded by typical Dutch countryside and also has two natural area’s that are used for recreation. Both the Jagersveld and ‘t Twiske are often visited by runners, walkers and bikers, as well as locals who want to enjoy the weather and swim in the lakes or take out a boat.
You can choose from a diverse range of hotels if you decide to stay in the municipality of Zaanstad. Each hotel in Zaanstad has their own qualities and specifications, so make sure to pick a hotel that matches your preferences.
