Booked the Prince of Wales Suite for a short break following our wedding. It was a very luxurious room with decent facilities and more than ample space.
The hotel is overall very smart and the bar and dining area in particular are very tidy and well kept.
Dinner in the Dewsnaps brasserie was excellent and good value for money.
Location wise, the hotel is a short 5 minute walk to the city walls and another few minutes to the York Minster.
It was in a good position to be able to drive to without getting too caught up in traffic and get out again without having to cross the busy city traffic again. Parking at the hotel is limited but fairly ample.
Would definitely stay there again.
Staff were excellent and the hotel itself is outstanding!! We stayed here for my best friend the night before her wedding and it was a perfect choice!!
One tiny niggle was using the spa and we'd been in the relaxation room for a while, when we came out we were locked out of the shower and locker rooms where all of our clothes and room keys were and a sign up saying it was closed. waited 15-20 mins for somebody to come and let us in after having to ring hotel reception which wasn't the end of the world, would have been nice to have an apology from the spa receptionist when she came back instead of her laughing when we told how long we'd been waiting!! Couldn't fault anything or anyone else though!!

"Great mix of nostalgic luxury & modern facilities"
I enjoyed a nice relaxing weekend in York. This is a great hotel for such a break due to the short pleasant walk into the city centre, very luxurious communal rooms, friendly attentive staff and high standards of catering. The live singer in the bar on Friday evening was most welcome, perfect balance of entertainment without being intrusive.
I was a little nervous when reading reviews about this hotel. We had a great experience! The room we were given was not in the older area of the hotel but in a newer annex near the front desk. Room was quite and spacious. Walked to the train station for coffee in the morning and easy access to old town (short walk).
Pleasantly surprised with our choice of hotel. Ideally situated for park and ride for York and also designer outlet 3 miles up the road.Hotel was better than expected with one of best breakfasts on both choice and quality. Our room was pretty standard nothing to shout about but very adequate. Didn't use the spa facilities but did inspect on our walk around the grounds. Staff were all very friendly and attentive. Thanks for all concerned.

This is a really nice hotel. The lady on the reception was helpful from the outset, giving us a tourist leaflet when I told her we were there on holiday. The room was very comfortable, with a sofa (that would have folded out into a bed if we needed) as an alternative to the bed for watching TV, a soft carpet and a nice chair at the desk. I can't normally sleep well in hotels, but the bed was so comfortable that I slept really well the whole stay. The shower was fantastic and there was lots of space for our bathroom things, and I liked the toiletries provided. My only criticisms would be that the adjoining door meant we could hear the guests next door really clearly (luckily they went to bed at sociable hours!) and the replacement of bathroom bits didn't need to be so zealous - we didn't need new towels and soap so frequently! I would definitely stay again.
"Great Hotel within a short walk to the City Centre"
Lovely room with a comfortable bed. Air conditioning and Wi-fi quick and efficient. Hotel is well presented and staff friendly. Mini fridge with complimentary water, apricots, chocolate and fresh milk for tea and coffee was a nice surprise. Our daughter is studying in York and we will be back!

A lovely, old-fashioned hotel. This makes a nice change from many modern hotels lacking any real character, however many of the facilities themselves appear very dated. To use the hotel as a base for a few days stay is perfect: the staff and resident cat are a nice addition to the experience.
Once enclosed by ancient fortified walls, York offers a wealth of cultural and historical sites, including York Castle, the National Railway Museum, and York Minster, a Gothic cathedral in the city center. The Shambles is a pedestrian-friendly street dating back to mediaeval ages, where it housed butcher shops. Today the scene is less gruesome, with quaint boutiques and tea rooms lining the road.
