Horrendous Hostel
The place needs kitchetes, a tv room and laundry facilities. Strong rules about losing your accommodation if you are found to make too much noise after 12 pm. The place needs a deep clean and the shower facilities need improving. Shared toilets are a bad idea and must be super uncomfortable for women.

Reasonable experience for such a low price
It's exactly what you would expect from a cheap hostel in the middle of a busy city. I needed somewhere to sleep and I got it. I did however have a couple of issues whilst I was staying. My locker was positioned somewhere where it was inaccessible. As I was staying one night It didn't bother me too much as I had 1 bag with few valuables and I slept with it in my bunk. But where I staying longer and had more baggage, it could have been a problem. Also the toilet door kept jamming in my shared room. That definitely needs looking at. On the whole though, it's a reasonable experience for such a low price.

Overall, a nice stay
Overall the hostel was great. Some slight unclean areas and maybe an investment is the bathroom areas could be better. Common areas such as halls and lobby were up to date and tidy. The hostel seemed very quiet for a saturday, some noise on the Sunday morning but it was no different to staying in the usual hotel chains apart from the bathroom size in our dorm. The staff were really friendly and welcoming. The location was great for the York night life

Staff where lovely, although the room was dirty, floor had not been swept, bathroom sink had toothpaste all over the basin, toilet had clearly been used, shower had a red stain on the floor. Food was mediocre only good thing was the one young lady that was at the bar giving drinks.

Noises off
Was kept awake by loud snoring from the neighbouring bunk and intermittent giggling from the bunk opposite. Early in the night the woman in a bunk on the other side demanded that I silence the clicking on my mobile as I typed.

It was fine
3rd floor. Very heavy luggage. No lift. The room was spacious, the 'en-suite' was so small, we couldn't sit on the toilet and shut the door. The shower was built for short people. The bed was very firm, which we liked. The room layout didn't make much sense, but we only stayed for a night so not really a problem. We loved the building, and there were lots of informative plaques around the house explaining architecture, usage, and history. We used the luggage room to stash our bags before and after checking in / out. Really useful. The staff were very friendly, and it the local area has lots of restaurants to chose from, and not far from city centre.

Good value
Safestay hostel has a friendly, helpful staff. Its in a good location with supermarkets, shops, cafes, postal mailing center and sights within a 10 minute walk. We stayed in the family room on the 3rd floor. The room was clean and spacious but the bathroom is tiny and the shower water was lukewarm. We did not have any problems with noise at night during our midweek stay. Breakfast was good with a variety of beads, meats, cheese, cereal juice, coffee, tea and yogurt.

Overall is good. The staff are great. Room is a bit cold but it’s probably coz someone keeps opening it. I had a problem with the shower that I cannot adjust the water right and had to shower in lukewarm water. Breakfast is good.

My one night stay.
The wash basins in room 3 were so small a person could only wash their hands effectively without getting water all over the floor. When I tried to wash my face I simply could not keep from getting water all over the floot. Everything else was fine modern and clean. I did not use the kitchen at all. I had no need to.

Regarding the size of the bathroom, due to being a Grade I listed building, we are unfortunately very limited in terms of change we can make to our rooms, bathrooms or the structure of the building. Double standards!!!
Unable to book in because I was slightly under the influence of alcohol. Meanwhile, the next morning a group were sitting on their entrance steps drinking copious amounts of alcohol!!

Hello, Thank you for your review. We are in the right to refuse the access of someone under the influence of alcohol. We, of course, have many groups of guests coming to York to party. However, they are not drunk when they are checking-in and there's nothing we can do if they want a few drinks once they checked-in as they are allowed to drink on the property. But, if these guests are being violent, too loud or make other guests or staff members feel uncomfortable or unsafe, we are also in the right to evict them. Kind Regards, Laurine

Good staff but should be cleaner
While the staff I met with were helpful and lovely, and the dorm setup is generally comfortable, the cleanliness and maintenance is not up to standard, even for a hostel. I stayed two nights, and it’s clear that rooms and bathrooms are not thoroughly cleaned daily, as small piles of trash including leftover food (from someone who had left at least a day before I arrived) were left untouched through at least two cleaning cycles. The soap in the bathroom was empty when I arrived and the toilet roll was not replaced when housekeeping went through. These are small problems compared to the general setup of the bathrooms, however. It’s a tiny plastic cabin without ventilation, and the floor is essentially one level from toilet to shower, meaning the shower water floods the whole bathroom, and the floor is constantly dirty and wet. This is made worse by there only being the cheapest, flimsiest shower curtain. Please, at least add a better barrier on the floor or a shower door. Furthermore, mold is growing on the ceiling and shower curtain from the unventilated moisture and lack of proper cleaning.

Nice, but...
This is a perfectly nice hostel in a really convenient location. The neighborhood is quiet from 5 am to 11 pm, but then all bets are off. The hostel sits squarely between a cluster of nightclubs and a cluster of bars, and the patrons go back and forth between them all night. If you like to stay out all night, this hostel perfect. If you like to sleep when most people do, this may not be the best choice.

Think Purple!
An absolute privilege to have the chance to spend a few nights in this historic building which has not been over developed although the amenities are more than adequate. Comfortable beds with safe storage, bar with pool table, breakfast room with use of kettle, toaster and fridge and also large lounge/chillout room and all very tastefully decorated (in my opinion!). Oh, and well located near the centre of York. Not forgetting the friendly helpful staff.
