Nice hotel right off of 101. Extremely nice was a bottle of Champagne in the refrigerator. And a bucket and two wine glasses!! Never had that before. They also had a wine and cheese hour. Very good. Staff was very helpful. Heated nice pool. Nice shops on state street, close, can walk it. The only negative was the bathroom and room off the bathroom was next to another hotels parking lot. They did have a pocket door to close between the bedroom so it was ok. older room. Many steps but very nice.
When we arrived,we were checked in by a very nice person. After directing us to our room on the facility map, he took a map of Santa Barbara and circled a number of things he liked to do close to the hotel. He even pointed out the parking areas downtown, and that came in very handy as we drove around town. We took his advice with a number of places to eat and to visit during our stay; they were all great. Each day in late afternoon, they have a wine and cheese get-together. In early evening, this turns into cookies and milk. Both were a lot of fun, and a good time to mingle with some of the other tenants. The first evening we were there, we walked down to the beach and took some pictures of the sun setting over the pier. We also stopped in at a restaurant right there and had a wonderful dinner. We were told by a number of people that it is safe to walk that area at night, and we certainly concur. This was a good way to unwind from the day's drive to Santa Barbara and to introduce us to the area in anticipation of the rest of our stay.
I have stayed at the hotel twice before and always enjoyed those visits. Since my last stay, the property has apparently changed ownership, and it was decided to initiate valet parking only. This is probably my strongest negative. First of all, the hotel is charging $30/day! Ridiculous, especially since the customer has no other choice. I was able to get the fee reduced because of being a return customer and because I pointed out that most well rated hotels in Newport Beach don't charge that much, and customers have a choice to self park. Self parking was never a problem on my previous stays, and patrons should at least be given a choice. I will say that the valets were very attentive, helpful, prompt and pleasant.
When we first arrived, the front desk could not find my reservation. I finally had to go out to my car to retrieve my Expedia confirmation and then they still seemed to have trouble locating the reservation.
Also, my friend requested an early wake-up call on the date of departure in order to catch the Amtrac train. She did not receive the call. Fortunately. I had brought a travel clock and she used her phone to wake us in time.
Finally, the drain in the bathroom sink smelled like swamp water. This is probably something that can be quickly resolved with some maintanence.
I will say that this is a really beautiful property, with beautiful grounds with hammocks and patio tables/chairs to sit and relax. The pool area was very attractive & clean.
This was truly an exceptional place to stay! To be honest, in all of the hotels I've experienced, this was by far the best, and the most memorable. The hotel itself is a quaint, smaller, privately owned hotel, so that means more personalized attention to detail, more character, and genuinely nice staff. The room had a charming Victorian décor, and the bed was beyond comfortable! Right down to the feather pillows! The location provided easy walking access to the beach, Stearn's Wharf, as well as plenty of shopping and fine dining options. And! The onramp to the highway(101 North and South) was just a block or two away. The hotel offered a free breakfast, and had wonderful options to please even the most finicky guest. They offered wine and cheese in the afternoon, as well as cookies and milk in the evening. I will return to Santa Barbara IF ONLY to stay here again. It made the trip so very special, relaxing, and downright enjoyable! The hot tub and pool were an especially nice addition, and were both open, even though my visit took place in January. A beautiful and enchanting place to stay.
Separated from East Beach by Stearns Wharf, a stone's throw from Santa Barbara's many dining and shopping destinations, West Beach is the place for adventurers looking to go kayaking, windsurfing, and sailing. With views of boats coming and going from Santa Barbara's main harbor, West Beach is also the ideal spot from which to enjoy the annual 4th of July and New Year's fireworks shows.
