Wembley, in northwest London, is best known for being home to the Wembley Stadium and the Wembley Arena.
Wembley Stadium, with 90,000 seats, is the largest football stadium in England and the second largest stadium in Europe after Camp Nou in Barcelona. It isn’t only football matches that take place here, but also rugby, American football (NFL) and concerts. The England national football team and English football’s governing body, the Football Association, are based atthe stadium. Wembley Stadium hosted the gold medal matches during the 2012 Olympic Games football tournament and it will be the venue for the UEFA European Football Championship 2020.
Train and Underground stations near the stadium and arena are Wembley Stadium (Chiltern Railways), Wembley Park (Jubilee and Metropolitan lines) and Wembley Central (Bakerloo line, Southern, London Midland and Watford DC line).
If your aim is to stay in a hotel near Wembley Stadium, you will be spoilt for choice, as there are more than a dozen hotels and self-catering apartments in its vicinity to suit all budgets and many more beyond. The 4 star Hilton London Wembley, located opposite the stadium, offers contemporary rooms with custom-designed beds and minibar, a British cuisine restaurant and a rooftop bar with panoramic views of the stadium and arena. Other facilities include a 24-hour fitness centre, indoor pool, steam room and sauna.
If you prefer a breakfast-inclusive rate and simpler accommodation, book a bed and breakfast. They come with comfortable rooms with all modern amenities, such as hairdryer, TV, coffee-maker and free Wi-Fi, and guests will be served a continental breakfast in the morning.
If you’re visiting with family, you could opt for renting a self-catering apartment, which comes with one or two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen with fridge, oven, microwave, dishwasher, a washer/dryer for your laundry, TV in the living room and free Wi-Fi. The 4 star Valet Apartments Wembley, for instance, is a handy 15-minute walk to Wembley Stadium and the SSE Arena, Wembley.
The obvious place to start is a behind-the-scenes tour of Wembley Stadium. Football fans can visit the England team’s changing rooms, walk through the players’ tunnel, see the Royal Box and lay their hands on a replica of the FA cup. An exhibition tracing the history of the Football Association is also available. The tour is open daily throughout the year except around Christmas and New Year or on major event days.
You may be lucky to have bought tickets for a concert at Wembley Arena during your visit. Some of the artists that have most frequently performed at the Arena are Whitney Houston, Cliff Richards, Status Quo and the Irish pop band Westlife.
If the excitement of football and concerts becomes too much, you can take refuge at the peaceful Shree Sanatan Mandir Hindu temple off Ealing Road, one of two Hindu temples in London. It was made of imported Indian limestone and took 14 years and £16 million to build. The temple’s impressive architecture features marble statues and carvings of deities that were made in India and flown over to be assembled in the UK.
Another peaceful retreat can be found less than three miles from the centre of Wembley in Perivale Wood Local Nature Reserve, a 27-acre area of ancient oak woodland and one of the oldest nature reserves in Britain.
A couple of fun attractions to go to with children are a visit to the Royal Air Force Museum London in Colindale, five miles northeast, to learn about the history of aviation and enjoy its interactive exhibits, and a tour round the Musical Museum, six miles south, in Brentley. The museum displays a collection of self-playing musical instruments, including a huge restored Wurlitzer theatre organ. The Musical Museum is open Friday to Sunday weekly and bank holiday Mondays only.
