Pocket Guide: Godalming Waverley Hotels

Waverley is a borough of Surrey with its council at Godalming. It's a pretty enough area, notable mainly for its Cistercian monastery. If you're staying at a Surrey hotel or guesthouse in this part of the country and are looking for a good place to go for a day out from your lodgings, the abbey at Waverley is highly recommended. There are some other attractions in the area too, easily reached by the local road network, and shopping opportunities in Waverley itself.

Hotels in Surrey for Waverley Abbey

The Cistercians were a medieval reforming order of monks and Waverley was the first monastery they set up in Britain. The monks responsible for founding it came over here from France in 1128 and settled next to the River Wey, and from this bridgehead the Cistercians quickly fanned out across southern England over the next few centuries. Visitors today come to see the well-preserved refectory with its 13th century vaulted ceiling and the lay brothers' dining room. The lay brothers did all the physical work here, allowing their spiritual superiors that much more time for meditation. When you visit the abbey from your Surrey guesthouse or other accommodation in the region you might have a flash of déjà vu. This is because the ruins have been used as a backdrop for films such as Elizabeth (1998).

Surrey Hotels and Waverley Excursions

You can park next to the Abbey in a free car park and then access the ruins over a stretch of uneven turf within a few minutes. Dogs are welcome too, as long as they're on a lead, which is useful to know if you're booked in to one of Surrey's many pet friendly hotels. This is a great spot for a picnic, and you can easily reach other attractions when you've had your fill of early Cistercian ecclesiastical architecture, fascinating though that undoubtedly is. Based at a Surrey hotel in the area, Farnham Castle Keep is a mere two miles away, and just a short drive farther off you'll find even older ruins at Silchester Roman City, with its impressive amphitheatre and walls.
