Pocket Guide: Wakefield

The landscapes of West Yorkshire invite holidaymakers throughout the year. They flock here especially in the summer to enjoy a range of outdoor sports and pastimes in the beautiful and varied landscapes of the county. Cities such as Leeds, Bradford and Halifax are full of entertainment and cultural venues, and stately homes like Harewood House in the north make great destinations for daytrips. Wakefield is a particularly attractive city, situated on the River Calder close to the eastern Pennines, with plenty of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses to stay at while you're in the area.

Explore West Yorkshire with a Wakefield Hotels

Wakefield makes the ideal scenic base for exploring the surrounding district of this eastern part of the county. When you stay at a West Yorkshire hotel here you can easily reach neighbouring Castleford and Pontefract, for instance, by road, or drive to the nearby eastern ridges of the Pennines. Wakefield itself is also full of interest. Readers will associate it with Goldsmith's novel 'The Vicar of Wakefield', but today the big attraction is its magnificent Yorkshire Sculpture Park. This is 500 acres of open parkland which is home to monumental and beautiful works by Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore, who were both born locally. The Hepworth Wakefield is another more recent addition to the area's cultural scene, a gallery which explores the life, times and works of contemporary artists.

Discover Wakefield

At the other extreme, Wakefield is a showcase for and celebration of the humble rhubarb. This is now officially a protected food, a status it shares with such other delicacies as Parma Ham. At the Wakefield Festival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb, held every February and lasting three days, rhubarb takes centre stage and can be sampled in a whole range of innovative dishes (including the world's best crumble!). This is just another reason for visiting Wakefield and exploring some of the rest of this part of the county too. Visit the nearby Pontefract Liquorice Festival, for example, and while you're here there are plenty of excellent Wakefield hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs to stay at.
