Pocket Guide: Vaudois Alps

Visiting Vaudois Alps

A mountainous region of Switzerland between Lake Neuchatel in the north and Lake Geneva in the south, the French-speaking canton of Vaud is known for its spectacular scenery and year-round leisure opportunities.

In the winter, the Vaudois Alps offer a total of 260 miles of skiing and snowboarding pistes, but if skiing isn’t your thing, you can enjoy tobogganing or cross-country skiing, ice climbing or curling, or just heading to a restaurant to take in the atmosphere. The summer months are equally appealing, with paragliding, rafting, canyoning and mountain biking all a possibility, as well as more relaxed pursuits like gondola riding, cheese tasting, or soaking in Switzerland’s warmest thermal waters at Les Bains de Lavey.

Visit the Vaudois Alps to see picturesque mountain villages and the resort towns of Villars, Leysin and Les Diablerets, as well as industrial and engineering highlights of Bex Salt Mines and the narrow-gauge railway which serves the area.

Exploring the Vaudois Alps

A classic ski resort with smart hotels and traditional chalet accommodation, Villars offers views of the Mont Blanc massif and is healthy, wealthy and fun. With highly regarded teaching facilities and plenty of other activities on the agenda, it’s an ideal destination for beginner and intermediate skiers, as well as those who won’t be skiing at all.

North west of Villars, the sunny resort of Leysin has a revolving restaurant at the top of La Berneuse peak, plus a well-known tobogganing park founded by Olympic bobsleigher Silvio Giobellina. It’s also home to three international schools which attract young students from across the world, giving the town a youthful cosmopolitan feel.

In the opposite direction, north east of Villars, the adventure sports hub of Les Diablerets sits at an altitude of 3,900 feet. Attractions in Les Diablerets include the Glacier 3000 mountain station designed by architect Mario Botta, which gives you access to the jaw-dropping Peak Walk suspension bridge between two snow-capped mountains.

Things to Do near the Vaudois Alps?

Nearby urban highlights include the famous Lake Geneva towns and cities of Lausanne, Montreux and Vevey. Lausanne is the capital of the canton of Vaud, and has been, since the International Olympic Committee designated so in 1994, the official Olympic Capital. While you’re in town, pay a visit to the Olympic Museum and archives, a major tourist attraction. East of Lake Geneva, the small exclusive resort town of Gstaad is easy to reach on a day trip from Les Diablerets, while the Regional Gruyère Pays-d’Enhaut natural park is the place to go if you’re interested in traditional cheesemaking, folk festivals and glorious alpine forests and pastures.

Whether you want a cosy timber chalet hotel, a classic ski-in/ski-out lodge or a luxury spa and well-being resort with every possible amenity, Expedia’s range of Vaudois Alps hotels is bound to have something suitable.
