Stroll out to sea, drop a line in with the locals or just admire the views from this iconic and photogenic pier with views of Fraser Island.

Urangan Pier stretches 2,847 feet (868 metres) into the Coral Sea, providing superb views out to Fraser Island and the bay. This long pier in Urangan, a suburb of Hervey Bay, is popular with both tourists and locals alike for walking and fishing on a fine day.

Constructed between 1913 and 1917, the Urangan Pier was originally built to support the export of cargo by boat. Since 1985, the structure has been closed to commercial uses and its old wooden frame was renovated in the late 1990s to make it suitable and safe for public use.

From the esplanade, walk out on the pier and have a chat with the fishing locals. Cast a line yourself for a relaxing way to soak up the scenery, with the exciting possibility of catching a fish or two for dinner. You can get local advice about size and bag limits, fishing gear and tackle in various shops in Hervey Bay.

To the east you can spot Little Round Island, Big Woody Island and Fraser Island. Watch as the boats and yachts from the marina follow the shipping channel out to sea and see kite surfers skip across the waves.

Look up to see pelicans, terns and other sea birds soar overhead. Stare across the clear blue waters to spot pods of dolphins, stingrays and fish that call these tropical waters home. Head down the beach beneath the jetty at low tide to see smaller lifeforms among the sand and pylons.

Enjoy a meal on the pier or in the shady grounds of the adjacent Pier Park. Bring a picnic, get a takeout from a nearby café or fire up one of the barbecues in the park for a typical Australian “sausage sizzle,” served with fried onions and ketchup on slices of bread. Take a seat on a bench to enjoy the views.

Time your visit to capture pictures of the pier at sunrise and browse the community markets that are on each Wednesday and Saturday in the park.

The Urangan Pier and the parklands are open permanently to the public and there is no entrance fee. The site has toilet facilities. Free car parking is available beside Pier Park.
