Aside from the surroundings, we enjoyed the Gobi Kelso. The room and bathroom were small, but sufficient, and very clean with all the amenities. Breakfast was individually prepared and consisted of toast, eggs, bacon, fruit, and lovely tiramisu. The front desk clerk was very kind and helpful, and his English was good, so we had no difficulty communicating. There are only 30 rooms, but the management is doing a good job for such a small hotel. If you are arriving by train and need to stay on the West side, the Gobi is probably the best choice in the area...a mere 5 or 10 minute walk to the station. That being said, it's not a dream location. Surrounded by decrepit Soviet-era apts on the West side of town, there is not much to do here, aside from watching TV or going to the neighboring karaoke bars. The sidewalks going to downtown are often just dirt, and we came back from a long walk to the pathetic State Dept. Store with bloodshot eyes and covered with dust. We later stayed on the East side of town at the Kempinski and found it to be surrounded by many seedy karaoke bars and tired-looking buildings as well. That leaves Central UB as the best place to stay, location wise, for a tourist.
