A Trip to Turtle Island
For a day trip with a difference away from the hustle and bustle of Kuta, Turtle Islands Park is a real treat. Made up of three islands, known locally as Taman Pulau Penyu, is one of three islands off the southern tip of Bali. Pulau Selingan is the only one open to tourists and this is where you’ll find Turtle Island’s turtles.
Whether you are staying in a luxury spa hotel on Kuta’s beachfront or a cheaper guest house inland, it is easy to reach Turtle Island. You can get there as part of an organised tour from Tanjung Benoa Beach, which is just a short taxi ride away from Kuta Beach itself. Some organised excursions will include pickup or drop-off at your Kuta hotel.
From Tanjung Benoa Beach, you’ll be whisked away to Turtle Island by glass-bottom boat. As you pass over the sparkling turquoise ocean, the underwater world will come alive beneath your feet as you spot colourful fish and elegant coral formations.
Once you arrive at Turtle Island, you will soon see how the island got its name! The island, which is dedicated to turtle conservation and protecting these endangered animals, allows visitors not only to get up-close and personal with hundreds of turtles but also to learn about their life cycle and get a chance to see their eggs and hatchlings. Depending on when you come to the island, you may even get to see how the hatchlings are released on to the beach – an unforgettable experience.
But there is more to Turtle Island than its hard-backed inhabitants. You’ll also find plenty of other wildlife on the island, including dinosaur-like komodo dragons, a variety of snakes, bats, iguanas and plenty of exotic bird species. Don’t forget your camera!
A trip to Turtle Island is the perfect outing for adults and children alike. And as it’s so close to Kuta, you can do it in half a day, leaving you plenty of time to get back for more fun in your resort.
