OK to stay if nowhere else is available

These are converted rooms are above the old Cavalier pub. Being an old building the walls of the room are somewhat uneven and the floorboards very creaky and, although in some properties this could add character and charm to a room, here they do not. The positive things were that the bed was comfortable, the shower was hot (though difficult to control), the towels were clean and plentiful and the in-room tea making facilities were good. Unfortunately the room cleanliness was not great - with the previous guests used toiletries still remaining in the shower, the underside of the toilet seat was "rotting" and appeared unsanitary, the glass shelf above the bathroom sink was so loose that it was impossible to place any items on it without them falling off into the sink, and the bedside light was badly cracked and almost completely broken. One of the two nights I stayed here I could clearly hear loud music and other noise coming from the bar downstairs until late into the night, however I guess that this is to be expected from a room above a pub.

Pros: The bed was comfortable, the shower was hot, the towels were clean and plentiful and the in-room tea making facilities were good.

Cons: General room cleanliness and the bathroom needs basic maintenance.

Location: Close to the centre of the town with food take-away shops opposite the pub.

We were met with, "There is no breakfast included and what time do you expect to be up in the morning?" We had one bath towel between both of us for the four nights, which was OK as there was no hot water. The landlady didn't clean the room at all during our stay, or empty the bins and we had to ask for additional loo paper. The noise was constant from either an air conditioning unit somewhere in the building but sounded like a generator. On our final night we had the delights of the 'live music night' which sounded similar to a badly run karaoke evening but they seemed to enjoy themselves. If we hadn't pre-paid we would have declined the room at the outset.

Pros: It was near the RHS Rosemoor.

    Cons: Everything.

Location: RHS Rosemoor was a delight, as was Bideford and the surrounding area.

    • Disliked: Cleanliness, staff & service, property conditions & facilities, room comfort

    Never again!

Tea cups not washed, tv no signal, no towels, no fan or air con, music very loud until 12:30am!! We didn’t stay, left at midnight.

When we boked the accomodation we were advised that there was a restaurant and that we could order a breakfast (we hadn't paid for it at the time of booking) .. when we got to the pub we were told that there wasn't a restaurant - the manager was told that it would be ready 3 days before he moved into his new role 10 weeks previous - this meant that we had to go elsewhere for our breakfast and evening meals When my partner was preparing to go out that night she plugged in the hair drier and the fuse blew and we lost all power to our room and the next door room as well - we told the manager and he couldn't have been more helpful and he chased up an electrician to sort out the issue As a temporary measure the manager installed some wandering leads In our room and installed some temporary lighting - when we returned that evening the power had not been fixed but it wasn't an issue as we had the wandering leads .. the manager bought us a drink that night and said that he wouldn't charge us for the rooms - the managers actions throughout the whole issue was impeccable My partner hardly slept for the night due a sound like an air con unit droning all night long - the next day (after the power had been restored) - we discovered some ear plugs in the bathroom which we both used on our second nights stay - this helped with the noise issues There was little tv or wifi signal - but that is north devon! The place was tatty - I wouldn't recommend it!!
