A very friendly place. It was modestly priced in a place where that is notable. Breakfast cost extra, but was quite nice. And best of all, they had a hot spring hot tub.

At check-in, the host gave us a quick tour of the essentials of the property, and talked us through a map of the local area (in English). We were then shown to our room, and I amost cried, it was so beautiful - tatami floors, futons, beautiful outlook to the river with the trees showing their autumnal colours. A little way out of town, but definitely walkable, and such a peaceful, beautiful setting.

This inn is great for foreign tourists! The owner speaks English very well and signs are included in the room to explain how to use the A/C or heater unit. Private onsen to enjoy the river view, though almost all rooms face the river as well. Futon is more comfortable than a bed, with two types of pillows. Nearby park area for hiking with jizo statues and waterfalls. Can walk to Toshogu Shrine as well. If you're into a lighter breakfast of a hard boiled egg, delicious bread and a fruit plate, it's great! Highly recommend this place for a relaxing experience!

Loved our stay!
There was a private onsen with a view of the stream. I’d love to return in autumn to see the leaves changing. The staff is very friendly. The bus stop was anbout 800 meters away, close to the Family Mart. Our family enjoyed our stay and hope to return.

The woman who owns the property is very friendly, knowledgeable about the area, and speaks very good English. The room was clean and spacious, and the private bath area was excellent! You can open the window to listen to the river while you soak. 💕 The location was excellent with most of the things we wanted to see within a 20 min walk.

We loved our stay here. Only a quadruple traditional was available for our time (2 of us) so the room was very spacious since they only lay out 2 futon instead of 4. First time sleeping on futon, which was comfortable for me but maybe some people may find hard. The place was very clean and quiet, at the edge of town next to stream. Unfortunately we couldn’t hear the stream very well over the sound of the heater. Down steep hill with no sidewalk from bus stop, we found it easier to walk up on less steep lower road back toward station to hit lower bus stop. Breakfast was very good! Wish we had more time there.

A pleasant stay in Nikko
A nice hotel near temple and shrines, just 5 to 15 minute walk to the sights. There is 1 private onsen. The room was a good size for the 2 of us and the beds were comfy with 2 pillows each. Overall, a pleasant stay.

Private Hot Spring Spa
Very friendly hosts. We are in our 60s so sleeping on a futon was a little uncomfortable. We had an early morning dip in the private hot springs, then set off to see the shrines and temples, about 15 minutes walk.

Very clean and comfortable in traditional Japanese tatami with a great view of the river. Hotel is relatively new and good private Onsen for use. However the location is a big far from the bus stop especially if you have luggage but it is compensated by its serene and quiet surroundings.

Fantastic inn to stay in in Nikko if you're looking for a low priced option. Japanese style rooms with comfortable futons. The staff is friendly and helpful. Tucked a bit in the outskirts of Nikko, but the town is small enough that it's a minor inconvenience.

Comfortable lodging in a convenient location
We stayed four nights here while enjoying the sights of Nikko. This hotel is convenient, comfortable and practical for that purpose. It is within walking distance of the major shrines, tucked away next to a river in a mixed area of residences, small businesses, and other hotels.

Nice ryokan in a peaceful place
A nice ryokan in a nice and peaceful area. If you want to explore rural Japan then Nikko is definitely an area worth checking out. The inn itself is located in a peaceful area, next to a river and a Buddhist temple, yet is within walking distance from town. Staff are very friendly, almost family-like, but don't expect fluent English. The room itself is a traditional Tatami Japanese-style room, please keep that in mind. I think that's a great experience that people traveling in Japan should experience at least once. You can hear the river flowing from the room. For me it was relaxing though I can see how others may dislike it. The inn has a small private indoor onsen - I don't know whether it's actually a natural hot spring but nevertheless it was very relaxing. Breakfast could have been better. Overall it was a very nice stay. Very recommended.

Wonderful ryokan with little onsen included!
Wonderful stay in a great location. Minutes away from the little statues with red beanies and a 15min walk up to the shrines and temples. We were also surprised there was a small onsen available to guests! We also opted for breakfast which was simple and delicious, and much more convenient than waiting for restaurants to open in the early AM.

cheap, close to shrines and temples, amazing staff
We loved our stay at Annex Turtle Inn and plan on coming back when we are in the Nikkō area again. The biggest plus to this place is the staff friendliness. The person who works at afternoon / night is incredibly sweet, helpful, friendly, and speaks English. She gave us recommendations to close restaurants, best walking routes, ATMs, and other sites outside of Nikkō. Turtle Inn is very simple and clean. If you’re looking for a fancy place - it’s not it. It’s tucked away from the main street, but is walking distance close to convenience stores and the UNESCO sites. My husband and I enjoyed our walks to the sites and listening to the running water flowing in the ducts around town. At night time, you can see the stars. The Inn has a spa downstairs which is a perfect ending to the day. Nikkō is a cute small town, but everything closes pretty early.

Pleasant stay in a local hotel in Nikko
We spent 2 nights at this hotel, very Japanese (futon, chairs). The manager is very kind and quite helpful. The hotel is quite clean, there is a pleasant "onsen". The location is a bit remote but very quiet and rooms have a view over the river. Breakfast is healthy (lot of fruit).

Quiet and Pleasant
Overall nice stay. Rooms were clean and comfortable, ryokan style lodging. The onsen was very nice, pleased that the onsen could be used privately 30 minutes at a time and throughout the night, my daughter was a little shy and wasn't interested in a shared onsen experience. Staff was very helpful. Bathroom in room was very nice.

Great hotel in the mountains
I really enjoyed this hotel. Although the room was Japan-style (sleeping pads on floor), the three pads provided plenty of cushioning. Besides two heaters, the comforter was literally four-inches thick. The low table and zaisu (chair without legs) made the room very comfortable. I loved soaking in the onsen also. Since you sleep and relax at floor level, don't book this room if you will have trouble getting up and down. The common area of the hotel has regular chairs and tables. Like 4 of 5 hotels where I stayed in Japan, the bathroom is very small. Use the hot tub if you want to soak. This was my favorite hotel in Japan, including a western-style room in Narita with double beds and larger shower.

Onsen to die for!
A lovely small hotel/ B&B in Nikko. Imagine waking up to the sound of the flowing river every morning and have it sooth you to sleep at night. This lovely hotel is situated right on the banks of the Daiya River, a perfect location in an even more perfect town. The rooms are spacious with a Japanese style table and chairs and beds, a heater that works like a charm and a nice functional bathroom too. The staff are lovely with great English and are very informative with instructions. The pièces de résistance..... the onsen available everyday after 3pm! With floor to ceiling windows with views overlooking the river you could waste your days away there. The only down side is the location, not walkable from the train station so do recommend using a taxi. The walk to the bus stop or convenience store is a little hike but nothing too unreasonable. I hope that they decide to start doing train station pick ups for their guests as this would be a huge bonus. Would come back time and time again just for the onsen itself and lets be honest who ever only goes to Japan once!

Short but enjoyable stay
We checked in late for only one night, but during our brief stay, we got to meet the friendly staff and enjoy the hotel's warm beds (covered with stacks of blankets). Our room was spacious for the two of us -- a bedroom with two twin western beds, a separate room with a low Japanese-style table, and a private bathroom/shower. They also have private baths down the hallway, but we didn't have time to use them. The hotel sits along a river that you can hear bubbling at night if you open your room window. The breakfast (extra) the next day was a big plate of delicious fresh fruit and breads. The decor and bedding could use some updating and our room's space heater gave off a bit of an odor, but overall, we'd recommend the place.

Not near to the Tobu-Nikko and JR Nikko train stations, but 6 of us took 1 large van-taxi and it cost only 1,200+ yen. Maybe even cheaper than taking the public bus, after which you still have to walk 10-15 minutes from the bus stop. The ryokan is located near a river and the Kanmangafuchi Abyss, which is less than a 10 minute walk away. If we opened the sliding paper window, there was still a net screen outside to keep out insects. You can hear the river then. We didn't opt for the ryokan breakfast but bought from the Lawson convenience store instead. The nearest bus stop is Sogo Kaikan bus stop (I think #7) and it is one of the stops on the way to the Chuzenji area.

Great stay at the Annex Turtle Hotori-An
We enjoyed our overnight stay in Nikko at the Annex Turtle Hotori-An very much. The inn was lovely. The staff was very kind and helpful. Breakfast was delicious and filling- the cut fruit especially tasty. Our traditional room had a western toilet. The window looked out into the woods and river. The futons were comfortable and cozy warm. We left our luggage in the train station lockers overnight and walked to the inn with just our small packs after nightfall. It was not too far - about 40-50 minutes walk. Nothing steep. And the onsen was perfect after that. We really recommend the Annex Turtle Hatori-An

Awesome place to stay!
This place is definitely an awesome place to stay in Nikko. It's very close to the stone statues in Nikko. The staff was very welcoming and helpful to me. I was studying Japanese and it was nice that they spoke only Japanese to me. :) The one thing that is a bit tough is the neighborhood. Most restaurants close at 5PM so it can be a bit hard to find dinner. It would be nice if the inn would also serve some dinner.

Enjoy the sound of the roaring river
I stayed two nights in a corner tatami room overlooking the roaring river. It was cold the first night and there was no way of adjusting the air conditioner. The room had a musty smell but other than those complaints, it was a pleasant stay and the proprietor gave great advice about local shops, sights and restaurants. I recommend going for a loop walk along the river. The hotel didn't provide a map, but there's one on a signboard in the adjacent car/bus park. The hotel spa was very nice, but you can't book and may need to wait. I stayed at a slow time just before the busy autumn season. Access to the spa is probably difficult in the busy season.

Excellent small hotel, own hot spring!
Stayed three nights; Japanese style room with view to river, water sounds to relax to! To get there, take a taxi from the station (about 1000 yen) but after, it is easy to take a bus back. You can walk to the shrines and staff will give you a map also indicating restaurants and cafes. Breakfast is simple (you need to book the day before, 1000 yen); fresh fruit, boiled, egg, tast and coffee/tea and orange juice, but satisfying and relaxed. The hotel has its own hot spring but there may be competition from other guests! Would definitely stay there again, it is so quiet, being outside the main centre, and right on the river on the outskirtsof town.
