Perched rather prettily on a hill overlooking Umbria’s attractive farmlands, Perugia is never too far away from the clean waters of the Tiber that keeps the soils of this area so fertile. The city is the epitome of charming: small, urbane, historic and with enough get up and go in contemporary times to be a contender for the European Capital of Culture in 2019. The historic centre is all cobbled streets, arched stairways and attractive piazzas ringed by welcoming cafes, bars and restaurants and fringed by grandiose palazzi. By night the trendy crowd keep the place going with plenty of lively bars and music venues. Did we mention it hosts one of Europe's best jazz festivals every summer too and is a centre for chocolatiers?
Piazza Quattro Novembre - Once a Roman reservoir today this is an austere square that is the main hangout of the city. Backed by the Duomo and centred around an ornate fountain, the square’s main attractions are the truly impressive Palazzo dei Priori and the fascinating Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria.
Corso Vannucci and Around - The most atmospheric streets of the old city can be found here - it’s perfect for an aimless stroll. This area comes into its own at night thanks to the lively cafes that are scattered around here.
Corso Cavour - From the Giardini Carducci you can enjoy fine views over Umbria with the Tuscan hills on the horizon.
Underground Perugia - Beneath the city you can visit, from the lower town, the remains of Rocca Paolina, a 16th century fortress. The medieval streets, which were used partly as foundations, can also be seen as you emerge into daylight at Piazza Italia.
Things to See in Perugia
Amongst the many historic gems on offer special mention should be made of Palazzo del Priore, a 14th century Gothic masterpiece that houses the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria. The views from the Giardini Carducci of the surrounding countryside are awe-inspiring and the Fontana Maggiore in the central square is intricately carved and a great place to watch local life unfold from.
