The proud city of Guilin was China’s original prime tourist destination. It has been described as “the best landscape under heaven” and inspired poets throughout history. The sparkling Rong Lake and Shan Lake in the city centre create a serene and elegant ambience and the clean and modern city is surrounded by breathtaking mountains and gushing waterfalls. With vistas that will remind you of classical Chinese paintings, Guilin is sure to inspire you too.
Central Guilin - Central Guilin is the number one location for shopping and people-watching. Pick up some souvenirs then take a seat in Central Square to enjoy watching the world go by.
South Guilin - Most of the interesting architectural sites are in the south of the city, such as the South Gate.
Guilin National Forest Park - This park, bounded by magnificent hills, is a great location for appreciating the area’s beautiful scenery and wildlife.
Jiangtao Zhou Ancient Town - A short bike ride from Guilin is this ancient village where you can explore the winding cobblestone alleyways and sample the delightful fresh tofu.
From the city of Guilin there are plenty of opportunities to admire the landscape of China at its best. Visit the Elephant Trunk Hill to pose for your photos with a rock resembling an elephant dipping its trunk into the Li River, then walk to the peak of the hill to see a fantastic view of the river from above. On top of Folded Brocade Hill there are pavilions and caves carrying intricate Buddhist inscriptions and sculptures. Back in the city a stroll at night sees the stunning Sun and Moon Twin Pagodas illuminated and the twinkling lights reflected in the shimmering lakes.
Take a tour of the Guangchang Museum to see ornate carvings and classical furniture. The small forbidden city of Jingjiang Prince Palace was once a royal home and today holds a museum where you can learn about its grand history. Another way to see the city is to take a river cruise down the Li River but those who seek adrenaline rushes may prefer to go white water rafting down the Wu Pai river just outside Guilin. To enjoy the stunning scenery and sights outside the city you can also arrange a guide to take you hiking through the bamboo forests, across the steep cliffs with their panoramic views of Guilin and out to the surreal Danxia stone peaks that resemble enormous snails perched on the slopes.
