Blue Mountains Attractions

A region of stunning natural beauty, with the blueish haze from the slate rock giving the mountains their name. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site just an hour or so from Sydney - the country’s biggest city. The mountains rise up to a height or around 1,100 metres, with a large sandstone plateau and valleys creating the distinct landscape. Much of the terrain is covered by the National Park, which also includes the forest that stretches up to the Hunter Valley wine region. Visit Katoomba, the largest of the towns in the mountains and other settlements like Medlow Bath and Blackheath for a real taste of mountain life.

Areas & Neighbourhoods in the Blue Mountains

Katoomba - The biggest of the towns in the Blue Mountains. There’s a definite hippie vibe here, with a creative population being inspired by the surroundings.

Leura - Next door to Katoomba, Leura is also full of boutique art shops and crafts, with a relaxed atmosphere about it.

Glenbrook - In the lower mountains, this peaceful town is the starting point of some great bush walks, with some top wild swimming options.

Springwood - Another lower mountains destination, this is the second biggest town in the Blue Mountains but not as much on the tourist trail as some of its lofty neighbours.

Things to See in the Blue Mountains

Echo Point in Katoomba is probably the most popular attraction in the Blue Mountains. It’s a lookout point with stunning views out over the Jamison Valley. Govett’s Leap is another of the spectacular look outs. Stand and gaze out over the Grose Valley or start your walk here. Kanangra Falls, Gordon Falls and Wentworth are other viewpoints that are well worth checking out. Head to the Corridor of Oaks, featuring trees planted by a number of Australian Prime Ministers, or take the Cliff Drive around Katoomba. The Zig Zag railway was used to go up and down the mountains before the tunnel system was created and the Megalong Heritage Farm gives you an insight into what life used to be like for settlers here.

Things to Do in the Blue Mountains
