This is one of the most visited areas in Costa Rica with its centrepiece being Arenal, the country’s most active volcano. During the day you can see smoke and cinder blocks billowing from the top and at night red lava pours down its steep sides. There are a number of other interesting and varied activities and sights in the area, including impressive waterfalls, river rafting, tubing and soaking in natural hot springs.
La Fortuna — At the centre of a wealth of geological wonders, this is a charming town. Watch horses graze on the grasslands, iguanas scramble up rocks and sloth peer down at you from the riverside canopy.
Nuevo Arenal – This tiny town is picturesquely sited near the beautiful Lake Arenal and is renowned for its breathtaking mountain and volcano views. You will also find quite an active night life here as well as a number of bakeries to pick up some treats.
Tilaran – A relaxed and laid back town with friendly locals, this is a great place to stay when touring the area. It has a fantastic spring-like climate for most of the year and visitors can enjoy a slow pace of life. This is an ideal place to stay for both families and solo travellers.
Chachagua - Chachagua is a beautiful tropical rainforest set among the volcanic mountain range of Guanacaste, just half an hour from the Arenal Volcano.
La Fortuna is where you will have prime views of the Arenal volcano’s active cinder cone emerging from the rainforest. You can also hike around the base seeing evidence of its last eruption and, at the same time, taking in the incredible variety of wildlife. The Mistico Hanging Bridges are not for the faint-hearted, perching precariously above the tropical transition wet forest. The Ecocentro Danaus is a must see for lovers of all creatures great and small. Admire the fluttering wings of colourful butterflies, listen to the calls of howler monkeys and watch out for the toothy grins of caiman crocodiles in a small lake.
Soaring through a canopy of trees on a high-flying zip line adventure is one of the many thrilling activities on offer in this region. Take an aerial tram to a lofty vantage point, scope out sweeping views of the Arenal volcano, and then cruise back to your starting point. There are also countless rainforest trails to stroll along or vantage points where you can enjoy sweeping views of Lake Arenal from. After all this exercise you’ll need a relaxing soak by relaxing in one of the many nearby hot springs.
