Pocket Guide: Mytchett Surrey Heath Hotels

Surrey Heath is a borough in Surrey, most of it falling within the Metropolitan Green Belt and with its council in Camberley. It was created in 1974 and its name derives from its extensive woodland and heath areas, such as Lightwater Country Park and Chobham Common, which are immensely popular with visitors seeking outdoor interest and walking trails. There are many accommodation options nearby, from family-run bed and breakfast establishments to small guesthouses and big Surrey hotels in the larger villages and towns.

Surrey Heath Attractions

Surrey Heath, as you might expect, is a largely rural area but there are quite a few towns and villages here too. They include Bagshot, Lightwater, Windlesham and and Bisley, all attractive little settlements which often have their own local traditions. Chertsey Abbey is a local attraction and features on the borough crest, as Bagshot was mentioned in an Abbey grant of 933AD. Bagshot Park was a royal park of the Normans, and the Stuart kings later used it as a hunting ground. Much of the Surrey Heath area was in fact originally part of the great Windsor Forest. The royal hunt associations are reflected in the crest's stag's head, and the military associations contributed the grenade on the crest. Surrey Heath therefore makes an interesting historic destination as well as a being great for a walk when you're based at a nearby Surrey hotel or B&B.

Surrey Heath Parks and Playgrounds

Surrey Heath attracts visitors today for its wide variety of play areas and parkland, making it a popular destination for family days out from Surrey hotels in the area. Lightwater Country Park is one of the most popular of them, with an adventure playground, walking trails and picnic sites. Blackwater Valley shares boundaries with Hampshire and Berkshire and runs for 30 scenic kilometres from Rowhill Nature Reserve in the south to Swallowfield in the north. The 32-mile Basingstoke Canal has been lovingly restored by the Surrey and Hampshire Canal Society and is worth a visit if you're interested in the region's industrial history, or just fancy a nice day out.
