"A lovely surprise"
I chose this hotel because I didn't want to stay in a big box. I was only staying one night, and was going to get up very early and continue my drive home to NJ. I arrived to find a beautiful, friendly spot, steeped in local Civil War history. The staff was incredibly welcoming and my room was comfortable, clean and quiet. The staff made sure I got a table in the restaurant as soon as I was ready for dinner (after a quick dog walk around the neighborhood - just lovely at sunset), and I enjoyed a delicious, top notch steak dinner with the house salad, a well-made and generous cocktail, and yummy dessert. Very happy! Over dinner I read a few of the brochures about the local antiquing and history, and decided to delay my checkout so I could poke around before returning home.
In the morning I took the dog across the street and saw a sign for the River Walk, so I set off in that direction, finding a historical marker at Signal Knob, then followed the path past the high school to the River Walk, ending at the Shenandoah. It was about 3 miles total, a perfect start to the day. I grabbed some coffee and wonderful coffee cake back at the hotel, then went to the local flea market, antiques Emporium, collectibles shop, and a great little home-made donut shop where the donuts are made with potato in a great variety of flavors - delicious!!
I didn't get to the museum or courthouse, but am definitely putting this hotel and town on my list for a return visit!
