Things to Do in Central Strasbourg

Situated right in the centre of the city, the small island of Grande île is the oldest part of Strasbourg. To the eastern side of the island, the Petite France area is a popular spot for evening strolls. Many of its 16th-century buildings now house traditional Alsatian pubs and restaurants that serve regional delicacies.

The astronomical clock inside Strasbourg Cathedral is one of Grande île’s main attractions. The large clock dates back to the 1500s and is still in working order. Every day at 12.30pm, the clock chimes and a procession of wooden apostles and biblical figures parades around the top of the clock.

Inside Rohan Palace

Built in the mid-1700s, Rohan Palace was inspired by the large mansions of Paris. The Neoclassical residence was home to the French nobility until it became used for some of the city’s museums in 1870. Since then, the palace has been home to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Decorative Arts. The museum’s Archaeological Museum, in the basement, displays artefacts found in archaeological digs throughout the Alsace and Rhine.
