Nice hotel near Loch Ard but terrible restaurant

Pros: View, location
Cons: Dreadful, overpriced food in the garden restaurant. Very high prices for breakfast, so we didn't take it. Room housekeeping is terrible.
Location: Near Loch Ard, Aberfoyle and Loch Katrin. There is fishing, canoeing on Loch Ard nearby. Loads of nice walks and cycle routes nearby too. Also a GoApe
We stayed at the Macdonal Forest Hills hotel near Aberfoyle for 3 nights at the end of April 2017. Our experience of our stay was mixed. Good points: - Friendly reception staff - Excellent that fresh milk and ice are brought to the room free of charge. This was done promptly each time requested - Very spacious feature double room with view of Loch Ard and balcony - Good pool and jacuzzi, steam room, sauna etc Negative points: - The restaurant. This is supposed to be a AA Rosette winning restaurant so we decided to treat ourselves to a meal there on our first night. The prices were high but we thought the food would be absolutely delicious. I ordered the hake which was ok, however, my partner ordered the chicken supreme which was appalling! Chicken supreme is typically in a creamy sauce with bacon pieces. What he was served was basically a piece of chicken on a plate, with no seasoning, flavouring or sauce whatsoever. It was served with 4 tasteless chips and some seaweed that also tasted of nothing. It cost £17. I have never tasted such a bland dish, and could not believe this would be served up in a restaurant that is supposed to be a very high standard. Clearly standards have slipped since the award was given, and the quality has not been maintained in order to be worthy of a AA Rosette status. I informed the hotel of our very poor experience at the restaurant. Housekeeping poor: room not serviced until around 4pm when we then wanted to be in our room.

Lovely hotel and pool... grounds are beautiful...

I love this area visited here a few times..the hotel room and grounds are beautiful...the cooked breakfast was poor very undercooked ..though the service was excellent...the pool area was good but for the size of the hotel it was rather small although not very busy we had to wait for jacuzzi then the steam room then the hot tub so not great hanging around waiting....there are lots of lovely places in this area so on my next trip I won't be going back here even though my stay was enjoyable with an Expedia deal ..I wouldn't be happy about paying full price to go here.....

Peaceful location

Hotel is situated in a peaceful location. Staff were nice and welcoming. Due to renovation being done, it was noisy at times and drills going off at 8am so had to mark it down for this but I'm sure it'll be lovely once complete.

Spectacular scenery.

Positives; This hotel is surrounded by spectacularly beautiful scenery. It is dog friendly and very comfortable. The staff are wonderful and cater to your needs the estate they can. Negatives; No mobile phone signal. Expensive dining and standard rooms are not worth it as you barely get any views. The spa isn't the best I have been too but it was good albeit slightly ruined by sales techniques at the end. Nobody wants to be 'sold' products after they have been massaged.

The room we stayed in was family room and smells of damp was very strong. Initially I thought its just our room was smelly but was all over the hotel It's need proper damp treatment or just airing the rooms, and decor was very old and dirty especially curtains. Its a shame as the location and view is breathtaking.

the hotel is in a very nice location of the loch Ard. Its very quiet and peaceful. Hotel room was spacious and bed was comfortable. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

Location: If God gave me a free creative hand I don't think I could improve the location.
Room was very comfotable with stunning views. Staff were proactive in going the extra mile to ensure you had a great stay.

Nice hotel away from it all

The reception and dining areas are very nice and well maintained. Whilst the bedrooms have the expected facilities they are a little tired and poorly maintained and in overall terms they could do with a facelift. Meals in the main hotel had little veg or extras whilst the Rafters restaurant was much better. All staff were very friendly and helpful if a little run off their feet at times.
