History and Culture in St. Petersburg

A number of popular museums are situated on the southern banks of Vasilyevsky Island, including the anthropological collections of the Kunstkamera. Peter the Great started the museum with his personal collection of stuffed animals and astronomical instruments, but the collection has since been expanded to include anatomical specimens and curiosities.

Just a few blocks along from the Kunstkamera, the Menshikov Palace now houses the State Hermitage Museum’s collection of applied artworks as well as many personal items of Prince Alexander Menshikov. The palace’s interiors were largely untouched during the Russian Revolution and world wars and, as a result, are some of the best preserved in St. Petersburg.

To see the main collection of the State Hermitage Museum, head to the ornate Winter Palace. Works from many greats, including Gauguin, Matisse and Picasso, hang in the exhibition galleries. The extensive collection of artworks amounts to around three million pieces spread throughout 360 rooms and can take a couple of days to wander around. One of the quickest ways to get around the Hermitage is to join a guided tour that leads visitors past the highlights.
