Near the coast, this centuries-old cube-shaped fortress offers a surprising event space, providing an exceptional venue for live music concerts and other events.

As one of the oldest parts of the ramparts along the sea, the Square Tower is an imposing block-like fortress whose history commands respect. It dates back to the 15th century and has played myriad roles over the years, from a gunpowder store to a Royal Navy meat warehouse. Attend a tearoom party to enjoy traditional English customs in this fascinating setting.

As you listen to live music concerts and watch dramatic performances here, appreciate the great acoustics. The main auditorium can seat about 100 audience members.

Weddings and other formal receptions are also held in this historic cube-like fortress. Corporate events and civil ceremonies are often arranged here too. Browse the works of art on display at the Crafts in the Tower event that takes place on the third Sunday of every month.

Inspect the niche in the eastern wall containing a bust of Charles I. This 20th-century replica of the initial work was created by artist Hubrecht le Sueur in 1623. Notice the impressive thick walls that protected the site from gun blasts.

Consider the rich history of the fortress, which was built in 1494, during the reign of Henry VII. It was part of the fortifications constructed to defend the harbor and city center. The edifice served as a residence for the city governor, a gunpowder store and a meat warehouse.

Outside, walk alongside the historic wall and admire the various public art installations. Climb to the top of these ramparts for stunning views of the coast.

The Square Tower overlooks the English Channel in the Old Portsmouth part of the city. Ride a bus to the Grand Parade bus stop, which lies just outside the fortress. You can also drive and leave your car in the Grand Parade parking lot for free from early evening onward.

While you’re in the area, visit other nearby sights such as the Royal Garrison Church, the Portsmouth Cathedral and the Round Tower.
