Spier is mainly known for being next to National Park Dwingelderveld. Recently, Dwingelderveld celebrated its 25th birthday. Over these 25 years, it has grown to be the biggest wet heathland in Western Europe. It does require maintenance to keep Dwingelderveld the way it is. If they’d let nature run its course, this park would ultimately change into a forest. Right now, the many height differences have resulted in a varied wildlife. Besides two sheep herds, there are many Highland Cattles that help to maintain Dwingelderveld the way it is right now. Another unique selling point in Dwingelderveld are the many creeks. With about 40 creeks located in this National Park, you’ll definitely see some on your trip to this park.
