The Little Room that Maintenance Forgot
We were in double room 10, on the 1st floor, which was clean, but very small. It would be better suited for single occupancy, as, had we been of larger build, they may have had problems manoeuvring around the space. The room was badly in need of maintenance. The floor at the end of the bed sloped downwards (obviously structural, but disconcerting when you felt like you’re falling down the floor!). There were also many screw holes, where things like bedside lights (there was only one ceiling light) and hooks obviously used to be and when I pulled out one of the drawers in one of the two tall bedside cabinets-cum-wardrobes, the front literally came off in my hand. The ensuite bathroom was also compact (we’d have done better paying less for a room with the shared bathroom, which looked big and good). There were holes in the bathroom door where hooks had been, so we had to put our towels over the doorknob or the shower rail. The toilet paper dispenser was loose, nearly coming off the wall and hanging lopsidedly by one screw when we left. The glass shelf above the sink was loose and sloped forward, the tubes of shower gel and shampoo had been used and the sink had a well at the back of it with no drainage, so any water stayed there. The room was quiet (apart from the occasional siren outside) and we had a good night’s sleep. The service was friendly and helpful and the breakfast was tasty and freshly cooked. A useful, central location and OK value, but far from ‘Very Good’.

Never again
I have read many of the reviews since our stay at City Park. Many indicated the rating as 8.5 out of 10. I don’t understand how the Reviewers came to that type of rating. Yes the place is relatively clean. Yes the breakfast as good and yes the young lady in the morning was pleasant and the location is central. HOWEVER the room We had #4 was extremely small and made it impossible for 2 people to move around. The towels provided were terrible and should have been tossed away years ago. The thing that bothered me the most is a safety issue. The doors to the room do not have door handles on either the outside or inside of the door. On the inside There is an old lock that requires two hands to open it. In the case of an emergency I’m not sure if you would be able to open it. To get into The room is not difficult. However to close the door without a handle meant that you needed to insert the key and pull the door shut using the key as the door handle. What a pain. I will not go into the condition of the owner when we returned to the hotel After England lost the Rugby final. We have stayed in other hotels close by the City Park and given the nightly rate being charged by City Park it pales in comparison to the other locations. I know that we will be returning to Southampton in the future but I will Never stay at City Park again.
