Pocket Guide: South Downs National Park

Receiving official National Park status in 2011, the South Downs is known for its attractive grasslands and striking chalk cliffs overlooking the English Channel. Today, you can find an excellent selection of luxury and affordable hotels in its scenic towns and villages, as well as plenty of superb natural and cultural attractions to explore and discover.

Fantastic Walking Routes

Take a relaxing stroll along the meadows one of Britain's most influential novelists, Jane Austen, and explore the Pilgrims' Trail that was once used by large numbers of Pilgrims travelling to Normandy.

Walk along the South Downs Way, which extends for 100 miles from Winchester to Eastbourne in East Sussex and passes many delightful historic villages. The route includes Chanctonbury Ring, a hill fort that is estimated to date back to the Iron Age and had a temple during the Roman era.

Visit Winchester, an ancient city that was once the capital of England and is still overlooked by a charming medieval castle. It's also known for its spectacular Norman cathedral and is the location of the Royal Green Jackets Museum, where you can where you can learn about British military history.
