South Bank Parklands

Swim in the sparkling water of an inner-city beach, stroll through lush gardens and taste gourmet gelato all while staying close to Brisbane’s busy downtown area.

The South Bank Parklands are a green jewel in the heart of the city, where families come to walk, eat and relax beside the gently flowing river.

Lounge on the white sands of Streets Beach and cool off in the clear water of the artificial lagoon. Watch the kids as the splash about in the Aquativity Water Park, a free activity playground where water spurts, bubbles and gurgles in all sorts of fun ways.

Walk the tracks that wind through some of the well-established gardens and breathe in the rich scent of tropical plants while you stroll along the Clem Jones Promenade at the river’s edge. Come at night to see the bright city lights shimmering on the water.

Stop off at the Nepalese Peace Pagoda and admire the intricate wooden carvings that cover this special site. Explore the Epicurious Gardens for a fascinating culinary journey through the edible plants used by different cultures.

Enjoy a romantic stroll through The Arbour. This gorgeous walkway is canopied in a magenta riot of bougainvillea flowers and can be seen lit up to dramatic effect in the evening.

Join the fun-loving crowds at one of the exciting events held throughout the year in the Cultural Forecourt. Nibble on croissants and macarons at the Brisbane French Festival, try something new at Regional Flavours or entertain the kids with an outing to the Live Large Festival.

Shop for souvenirs at one of the many markets held in the parklands. Pick up ornaments, jewelry and clothing from the Collective Markets, or see if you can catch the monthly Young Designers Market. This is your chance to get a bargain from up-and-coming designers before they hit the big time.

Get a bird’s eye view of the city from the Wheel of Brisbane. This 197-foot (60-meter) tall Ferris wheel has appeal for the whole family. Listen to the audio guide to learn some interesting historical facts about some of the local landmarks.

From downtown Brisbane you can reach the South Bank Parklands via one of two bridges. Cross the Victoria Bridge to reach the northern end of the parklands or use the pedestrian-only Goodwill Bridge from Gardens Point to reach the southern end.
