Wonderful Staff - great location

Driving on the Amalfi Coast is a nightmare and Sorrento unofficially marks the beginning on that coast. So, Sorrento is a good place to park or turn in your rentcar and go to plan "b" for exploration of the Coast. In Sorrento there is a small public square that has a VERY long ramp that leads down a couple of hundred feet to the shoreline - that goes down/up for basically 1 Euro each direction. This hotel is directly across the street from that square. The ferry port from which boats leave for Naples, Amalfi, Capri, Positano etc can be reached via taxi or by taking the elevator or ramp from the square. Since we were there in October the restaurant in the hotel was closed because it is no longer "the season" however, they still serve free munchies and wine at happy hour everyday on the terrace where the restaurant operates during the season. The hotel is finished in period style but updated with nice bathrooms and fixtures. The staff on the front desk is just wonderful. They can arrange tours, taxis etc for you - they are licensed travel agents - and nothing seems to be too much trouble. I will warn you that the Amalfi Coast is NOT cheap. It seems that when you open the door of a taxi in Sorrento - you can just assume it will be at least 20 Euro regardless of time or distance. While I think this is a bit of a ripoff - you can't blame the hotel for it. We had the same experience everywhere regardless of who booked or how we got a taxi.
