Sloten grew into a city, but started as a fortress on a strategic spot on the trading route from Bentheim to Stavoren. Sloten even played an important role in several wars, like the 80-year war with Spain. Spain tried to take the city by hiding soldiers in a beer ship, but this did not work. At the end of World War II, the Germans blew up the bridge over the Ee to slow down the Canadians. Nowadays it is mostly visited by people interested in water sports and tourists.

If you liked this bit of info on the history of Sloten, you are going to love a visit to the city. Sloten still has its original city walls and a part of the city is registered as a protected sight. This includes two gates, the waterway and the houses lining the waterway and a mill. The last one has an old cannon that is fired every Friday night in July and August.

Even though Sloten is only a small city, you will find several things to do in the city centre. There are restaurants and bars, so if it is not raining, you can take a seat at one of the terraces and enjoy a drink. There is also a museum; Stedhûs Sleat. The museum, housed in the former city hall, offers exhibitions and activities based on local art and history. This is also the main tourism information point in the city.

Sloten belongs to the municipality De Friese Meren, named after the many lakes in the area. The Slotermeer is the closest to Sloten and it is perfect for a warm day in summer. The lake has a beach where you can go swimming, but water sports such as sailing and surfing are also popular.

Two bigger cities are Sneek and Heerenveen, though the capital of the province, Leeuwarden, is not far away either. The latter has theatres and cinemas, a busy shopping street and typical Dutch ‘gezellige’ bars, clubs, restaurants and terraces.
