Sloten grew into a city, but started as a fortress on a strategic spot on the trading route from Bentheim to Stavoren. Sloten even played an important role in several wars, like the 80-year war with Spain. Spain tried to take the city by hiding soldiers in a beer ship, but this did not work. At the end of World War II, the Germans blew up the bridge over the Ee to slow down the Canadians. Nowadays it is mostly visited by people interested in water sports and tourists.
