Things to Do in Sesimbra
Visit the Castle of Sesimbra, which stands on a cliff, providing amazing views over Sesimbra. Also known as Castelo dos Mouros, inside you’ll find a number of fascinating permanent exhibitions.
Head to Cape Espichel, a promontory located west of Sesimbra that overlooks the vast ocean. It marks the southwestern edge of the Setúbal peninsula and has some of the best-preserved dinosaur footprints in Portugal. One is from the Cretaceous period (the Jazidas de Lagosteiros) and the other is from the Late Jurassic era (The Pedra da Mua).
Go diving around Espichel Cape. A cargo ship was intentionally sunk here in 1989 to create an incredible manmade reef – well worth exploring.
Book your hotel near Aldeia do Meco and relax on one of Sesimbra’s best known beaches, Meco Beach. Around Sesimbra you’ll find beaches to suit all tastes, whether you’re looking for top surf on some powerful waves (on the edge of Meco) or calmer beaches (on the edge of the Serra da Arrábida National Park).
Discover Albufeira Lagoon Beach, which is another beautiful beach located near Alfarim. On top of its beach, the location is also known for its sweets, ‘Broas of Alfarim’, made of wheat and corn flour, fennel, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon zest.
Get up close and personal with nature and book a hotel near the Arrábida Natural Park. This park covers the Arrábida Hills, which are excellent for hiking, jeep tours, mountain biking, climbing and nature photography. It has two beautiful beaches too, Portinho da Arrábida and Figueirinha.
Taste the local gastronomy, which include fish grilled over coals, swordfish and octopus rice. You’ll find plenty of excellent restaurants and bars in Avenida dos Náufragos.
