Disappointed with the lovely building needing so much work, it is so tatty inside. We had a fire alarm and no one was around to explain or supervise.most surprised the fire brigade DIDN'T APPEAR AT ALL..

Awful Hotel

Posted 05-Sep-2017
Pros: Nowthing
Cons: Ask IHG to give some recommendations on how to furnish and run a hotel
The review should allow scores of ZERO, as to get a score of ONE is to have achieved something. If you book a basic double, be warned, you are 2 sub floors in the basement with no window, no moving air, extremely hot and very noisy. Britannia hotels have a habit of acquiring beautiful old hotels and totally ruining them.

Very large hotel managed on a very small budget

Posted 04-Sep-2017
Lack of reception staff leads to permanent queues at the check in desk. We arrived to find an enormous queue and it took us 1hr and 20 minutes to check in. That experience was eclipsed by finding our room located in the internal bowels of the building , had no window and all around smelt of dampness . The breakfast was ghastly , with discoloured fruit reheated dry bacon and disgusting sausages . Any staff in general were few and those you did encounter were poorly trained , had no name badges and were dressed in dirty or badly fitting uniforms . All in all quite the worst hotel I've ever stayed in and Britannia hotels should be put out of business if it doesn't do it by itself sooner or later .

Nice looking grand hotel but very disappointing v

There was no free parking you need a street permit which cost 3 pounds and there was no parking available in the end had to use private paying parking. The room itself was 3 floors down with no windows and closest description is of being in a dungeon. The room itself was clean and bed comfortable.

Old and grubby

Posted 28-Aug-2017
Long wait at check in. The extra bed that we had requested for our 10 year old grandson wasn't there. Moved to a new room with no windows beside the kitchen on level -1. Very hot and noisy. Bed wasn't made or room tidied the three nights we were there. Very disappointing.

Disappointed

Lovely old building, but room 2 floors down. Nicknamed it the dungeon, dark, dirty and airless. Strange green safety light remained on all night, like seeing through night vision goggles.

Nice hotel close to the beach

Paid for a standard twin room but was given an executive room with sea view on arrival so couldn't complain about that, especially as the bath had jacuzzi ☺️ The only thing was the food, we only had breakfast but didn't find it great quality! My son looks forward to his English breakfast when we stay away but it wasn't great! The sausages were rock solid and over cooked, and long queues to even get anything to eat!! All in all though, I wouldn't grumble for a couple of nights away from home!!

Beautiful Grand Building but such a shame!

Posted 19-Aug-2017
Stayed at this hotel 35 years ago so a trip down memory lane. The building is amazing from the outside but needs massive investment on it's interior. It is so sad to see it so run down. Carpets and decor so very very tired. Bedroom carpet was total worn through. Bathroom was good.Bed was clean and comfortable.Evening meal in Harbour restaurant was very poor, infact we didn't attempt the meal on our second night ( ours was just a two night stay) Breakfast was nice although getting a hot cup of tea/coffee was impossible as water in the dining room for this purpose was in large flasks which only kept the water warm not hot! Some of the staffs hygiene practises were worrying as we witnessed first hand utensils being put onto unclean surfaces and then removed from there and dropped straight back into the urn of soup. The soup that we then decided against eating! The staff waiting tables looked general unkempt with tatty uniform and unironed clothes.Tables felt sticky and uninviting....so loads of room for improvements that cost very little. Evening entertainment was ok with kids film, bingo and cabaret. Did feel very sorry for the employee running the bingo on the 17th August. He was expected to sell tickets and run the games single handed, not easy when you have players spanning two floors. He failed to hear a woman call her winning game and proceeded with the game...the woman did not get her prize as he then claimed she was a 'misclaim' as she did not call! He needed an assistant.
