Bathrooms smell of mildew, rooms are getting considerably run down.
This was my 3rd and 4th stay at Unizo in Sapporo. While I originally forgave them for the mildew smell in the bathrooms, I have now stayed at enough accommodations in Japan with similar “container/prefab” bathrooms to know that they don’t all have a mildew problem. In fact, this seems to be a problem unique to either Unizo or the model of prefab bathroom they use. I have stayed in four different rooms at Unizo and in every one of them, the bathroom smells of mildew.
In addition, maintenance of the rooms has significantly worsened since I stayed here two years ago. The wall from the entrance door to the opposite side of the room is covered in scuff marks from people’s luggage, and it appears that no attempt has been made to remove the marks (at the minimum, install a piece of molding that protects the wall!), and the carpets, which are industrial, replaceable squares, were flat-out filthy this time. On a carpet that is piecemeal replaceable, that’s unforgivable.
I really liked this location and the staff, but when I come back to Sapporo, I’ll be looking for a better place to stay from now on.
