San Juan (province) Holiday Packages
Try this region’s famous wine and olive oil, see its capital city's main sights and explore the moonlike terrain of its parks.
San Juan is a mountainous province with river valleys and rock formations in arid areas. The production of wine and olive oil are essential to the area, which is a key paleontological site. Visit the provincial park to learn about dinosaurs from the region.
Get a glimpse into the province’s more recent culture in the historic centre of San Juan city. Admire the San Juan Cathedral and its red tower rising above Plaza 25 de Mayo. Learn about the life of a 19th-century Argentine president in the Casa Natal de Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. This building is where Sarmiento was born in 1811. Today it is a museum with décor and furniture as it was in the 1860s.
Find out about San Juan’s place in the Argentine wine industry at the Santiago Graffigna Wine Museum. It documents every step in the history of the province’s oldest wine bodega. Note that only Mendoza produces more wine than San Juan in Argentina. Relax with a picnic amid the trees and lake in the scenic Parque de Mayo.
Make your way to the western outskirts of the city for the Ullum Dam. Take a tour of the large artificial dam that regulates water flow in this arid region.
Further west is the small town of Barreal on the flanks of the Los Patos River. Visit the bumpy landscape of Cerro Alcázar.
Hike through the otherworldly terrain of the Ischigualasto Provincial Park, which is also known as the Valley of the Moon. It is a significant archeological site, where many plant fossils and some of the oldest dinosaur remains were discovered. Note how the hot wind has formed the red clay soil formations here as well as in the Parque Nacional El Leoncito.
Expect arid conditions in this baked landscape with occasional electrical storms. Make sure to bring extra water and sunscreen for trips to the dry and hot parks.
The area is in the northwestern part of the country, bordering Chile and the provinces of Mendoza and La Rioja.
San Juan is wine country with parks full of extraordinary natural formations and dinosaur discoveries.
