Lots of Character

Cool building. Friendly staff. Very good food. Rooms small with sliding bathroom door so no privacy. Was fine for short stay but wouldn't do more than day or two.

Wow, what an incredible stay!

Pros: Everything, everything. I cannot think of a way they could have treated us better. I'll tell my wife's siblings to go here when they come to CR.
Cons: How can you improve on pure bliss? Next year, we are coming back here!
Location: Museums and such nearby, take a cab as cabs are very reasonable in San Jose. Restaurant at the hotel is reputed to be best in the city. I believe it.
What a gem, the Hotel Grano de Oro was! We tied this into our plane booking (at my wife's prompting, more on that in a moment), and am so glad we chose this place! My wife suggested as we would be flying most of the day, perhaps we could find a place in San Jose and just call it an early day once we landed. We got to the hotel early evening, were greeted warmly. Once you walk in, the hotel is inviting, comforting, and enveloping. Check-in was a breeze, and while our bags were taken up, we got a nice drink at the bar. We enjoyed our drinks, then made a dinner reservation, retiring to our room before dinner. I do believe we got an upgrade on the room, as the room was grander than we expected. After a short nap and shower went to dinner. Of a choice to eat in courtyard or the dining room, we ate in the courtyard. Lovely dinner, lovely service, and excellent wine. I honestly forgot what we had for desert, however I do recall that feeling of bliss one gets when everything is just right. Retiring up to the room, the bed was quite comforting and slept soundly. Even though we had a room on the exterior I could not hear any city noise. Nice wood floor and ceiling of a wood native to Costa Rica and done in a dark coffee stain. Very classy, and when we go back, I will ask if this same room is available. At breakfast sat in the dining room, and had wonderful breakfasts. The staff coddled us. Next year, two or three days here, wife and I agreed.

Centrally Located Hotel

Posted 05-Apr-2017
Pros: Location and the restaurant.
Location: Easy walking distance to downtown.
The location within walking distance to downtown is excellent. The historic building the hotel is in is very beautiful and the restaurant is superb. If there is one negative about the hotel it is that the rooms are a bit small and could use some seating.

Very nice and convenient location.

Extremely noisy the room above ours! There was a family with children running and jumping up to midnight when we called the front desk to complaint about it!

Great hotel in downtown San Jose

Had another fabulous experience. First stayed here on honeymoon 15 years ago and took our kids on the way home from Spring Break, just as charming as I remembered

This hotel has amazing architecture and the staff was very friendly and helpful. We booked a standard room and did not realize that the bed was an american full bed as oppose to a queen size. If it had been more than one night it may have been an issue.

This a marvelously designed and managed hotel. The staff are excellent. We learned that many have worked there for decades. The restaurant is also excellent and is elegantly designed.

This Hotel is a destination, in my opinion. The neighborhood is nothing special but the hotel is just about our favorite of any hotel we have visited in the world. The service is outstanding. Just a favorite forever.

Excellent historic hotel!

Hotel Grano de Oro is an absolutely charming historic hotel. We only stayed there for one night but we thoroughly enjoyed the extremely helpful and courteous staff, the easy and safe parking, the relaxing roof-top jacuzzi, and the beautiful room. Our favorite part of our stay was eating dinner at the hotels restaurant. The food was delicious and the service top notch!
