Nice hotel - close to everything

Posted 05-Dec-2016
Pros: The location
Older hotel with a lot of character. It was clean which is very important to me as a traveller. Since it's an older hotel, the room, bathroom, elevator and stairs are on the small/narrow side. I'm a small person so it didn't bother me at all but I could see how others would see it as a downside. The elevator was a bit on the slow side so I mainly used the stairs. My room (6th floor) overlooked other buildings so it was on the quiet side of the hotel. I stayed in November when it was cold and didn't need A/C so I found the temperature of the room comfortable. The wifi connection in the room was good. There was complimentary tea/coffee/water and cookies which was nice to have after a long day of sightseeing. It's a block away from Union Square which is convenient. The hop on/ hop off buses and cable car stop at Union Square so if that's what you like then you're in luck because it's so close. I like to walk (a bit faster than the average walker) and was able to walk to Chinatown, Lombard Street, and Fisherman's Wharf (within 20 - 35 minutes). The Chancellor is also a few minutes walk from the Powell Street BART station which is convenient for those who are using the BART to get from or to the airport. There are a lot of restaurants, coffee shops as well as shopping (Macy's, Saks Fifth, H&M, Uniqlo, etc) around the hotel. I didn't interact with the staff too much but when I did they were pleasant. Would stay again.

Nice vintage hotel in great location.

The hotel has character and history. The staff was very friendly. We literally could see union square when we stepped out of our hotel. The location is easily walkable. The only negative was that the vent above the shower head was caked with dust otherwise the room was clean.

Great location but poor hotel!

Posted 30-Nov-2016
Pros: location
Cons: Rooms, remodeling
Location: shopping
Love the location, right in union square, walking distance many attractions in the area. The coffee and cookies was very nice as well. But the room was so tiny and the hotel is outdated. I would rather drive a little further but have a comfortable room and hotel . If location is your top priority, this one may be just fine.

Nice centrally located hotel

Great, friendly and helpful staff. Room neat and well kept. The candies in the room are a nice touch. I'd certainly stay there again and would recommend it to anyone.

Excellent location

Posted 29-Nov-2016
Pros: Location, cleanliness, charming.
Cons: The bar area.
Location: Lots of sights and shopping, great place to be to get round the city.
Fab location smack bang on Union Sq. we were at the front, but it was not noisy. The hotel has an old world charm, though the bar area next to the foyer was a bit like a bar in a railway station... Charmless and bland. Overall, room was excellent, clean, spacious. Hotel concierge friendly and helpful. Would stay again if in the area.

Union Square classic hotel atmosphere

Posted 27-Nov-2016
Pros: Great staff, pleasant lobby, clean room.
Cons: Only two small complaints: The room smelled slightly of smoke and the proximity of the toilet to the bathroom wall was an acrobatic challenge.
We like to try different hotels in the Union Square area so it was the Chancellor's turn for our Thanksgiving S.F. getaway.
