With an appealing mix of sandy beaches, rocky coves and lively entertainment options, Salou has been a draw for visitors to the Costa Daurada for decades. Both the Greeks and the Romans left their mark in Salou, and the city’s long history is reflected in a number of monuments and other sites of interest, including the 16th-century Torre Vella (Old Tower), the restored Lighthouse of Salou and the Church of Santa Maria del Mar. The focus of much of the action is the Paseo Jaume I, the promenade along the seafront where the city and its visitors come together to stroll in the shadow of palm trees and the iconic Modernist monument to the Catalan monarch. Salou is also a town for sport enthusiasts, with a number of golf courses, tennis courts and great routes in the surrounding area for running or cycling.
Of course, it is the sea that brings most visitors to Salou. Popular beaches include the Llevant and the Platja Llarga, both of which enjoy wide expanses of sand leading to the warm Mediterranean waters. But the attractive landscape surrounding Salou also offers a number of smaller beaches, set in rocky coves, where you can escape the crowds. Salou is also a draw for watersports enthusiasts, with a range of activities on offer including paddle-boarding, windsurfing, snorkeling and fishing. Out of the water, as well as the ever-popular beach bars, Salou is home to a variety of nightlife options, including bars, pubs and clubs. Foodies might like to tuck into the regional dishes filled with fish, shellfish and local vegetables washed down with a glass two of the region’s excellent wine.
If the warm waters and favourable climate are what draws many families to Salou, there is plenty to do beyond the beach. The PortAventura Theme Park is one of the most popular in Europe and includes five themed areas, numerous rides and other attractions, a water park and daily displays and performances. Back in Salou city centre, don’t miss the daily Luminous Fountain displays with over 200 colourful combinations or the tourist train that takes you past the main tourist and historic sites as well as some of the more off-the-beaten-track coves and beaches.
As a long-established tourist destination, Salou has a range of hotels to suit every budget. Those looking to make the most of their time in the open air can choose from a number of adventure sport hotels or golf hotels, and there are numerous family-friendly accommodation options, including apartments or hotels close to the beach. With its fine restaurants and lovely coastal walks, Salou is also a great destination for a romantic getaway and the perfect place to relax, unwind and escape the stresses of everyday life. Don’t miss the idyllic sunset from the Pilons monument at the end of the Llevant Beach.
